The highlights
  • On a late summer evening there really is nothing like coming back from a hike and unwinding in the outdoor hot tub with a cold bottle of local beer.
  • The property has been newly restored inside and out, with fresh finishes, appliances and entertainment systems, making it a real delight to occupy.
  • Larger groups are welcome to book other properties in the collection for large-scale wedding parties, family reunions or other get togethers.
  • In the warmer months, spend all day and evening outdoors, with a firepit, outdoor dining furniture and even a BBQ grill, so you rarely need to head indoors and leave the hot tub.

The detail

Located in a charming, scenic green landscape popular with children and adults alike, Drum Barn is a picturesque and spacious former agricultural building, now renovated to create a high-end self-catering space, with accommodation for up to eight guests between four en-suite bedrooms. Ideal for family get togethers, old friends reuniting for weekends, groups of couples and any other parties looking for a no-compromise country cottage combining historic charm with contemporary features, Drum Barn is a delightful space and the dream destination for anybody looking to explore this beautiful corner of the world.

The property has been refurbished around the principles of simple, straightforward materials, confident architecture and comfortable, light-filled rooms, successfully creating a space which is simply a delight to inhabit. The downstairs areas are arranged on an open plan basis, the sort of rooms where guests lounge around in the evening together, cooking, reading, sharing a bottle of wine and just taking pleasure in one another’s company. An engineered wood-burning stove keeps the space cosy, and with picture windows, a large television and a range of activities, there’s any number of ways to pass lazy evenings and rainy afternoons with your good friends or family. Be sure to rest and unwind in the hot tub too, which offers you and your friends a delightful spot to relax after a day out exploring the local area. Also outside is a lovely alfresco dining space, a fire pit and a BBQ. This provides you and your group a fab location where you can while away summer evenings in style.

The open plan modern kitchen is stocked with everything you’ll need for hearty home cooked meals every evening, and the free-flowing design allows whoever’s on cooking duty to remain part of the conversation in the lounge. The hob, fridge, oven and appliances are all recent additions and no expense has been spared in creating an impressive kitchen stocked with the latest in culinary technology.

Outside, a grassy and open space gives children somewhere to blow off some steam, while upstairs the four bedrooms are all spacious, beautifully crafted rooms, characterised by tasteful, comfortable furniture and original wooden beams overhead. The first bedroom is set up with a super king sized bed which can be divided into twin singles, the next two have standard king sized beds, and the fourth bedroom has a versatile set up with the possibility of setting it up as a king sized bed or twin singles.

The closest settlement is the village of Great Whittington, a quaint and historic region which makes for the perfect day trip. Snaking past the cottage there are a number of footpaths and trails, and for hikers, foodies and general explorers, slightly further afield you can find the delightful town of Alnwick. From nights out in Newcastle’s famous clubs to the historic Alnmouth Castle, there are endless activities for everyone in your group, with coastal walks and an afternoon browsing in Barter Books both well worth the drive. Whatever season you visit, the region is simply stunning.
