A seductive coastal hideaway just outside Rye in East Sussex, The Gallivant specialises in soothing rooms and irresistible food. With the golden Camber Sands just 3 minutes’ walk away, The Gallivant takes its design inspiration from the motels found along the coast of California, and the likes of The Independent and Daily Telegraph have listed it among their favourite seaside finds.
There are plenty of options when it comes to choosing a room. Small or large, you’ll find yours equipped with a widescreen TV, DAB radio, hairdryer, bathrooms and top quality tea and coffee, not to mention a wonderfully comfy Hypnos bed.
Deck rooms have their own outside space, and the delightfully muted colour scheme is subtly cool. Check out the garden rooms, too: a huge roll-top bath and power shower, velvet furnishings and a supreme super-king size bed are just some of its treats. A Nespresso machine, in-room pantry, minibar and Bluetooth sound system make it even better – this is a room you really won’t want to leave.
As if the accommodation alone isn’t enough, eating at The Gallivant is really something special (and that’s not even considering the in-house tuck shop). The calming restaurant is run by experienced chefs who have worked in some of the country’s best kitchens, so whether it’s breakfast, lunch or dinner you will be well taken care of. Breakfasts are flexible and fulsome, with a fantastic buffet and a la carte choices – or just lie in for a while and get some brunch instead.
Menus are packed with locally sourced ingredients and homemade treats – Romney Marsh lamb, Dungeness cod and home-cured bacon among them. You can also enjoy another daily treat on the house, with afternoon tea and cake served at 4pm. Hungry yet?
With the pretty harbour town of Rye just a few minutes’ drive away, The Gallivant certainly has an enviable location. On the edge of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty – which straddles Kent and Sussex – Rye remains peaceful and charming and within easy reach of plenty of other picturesque places.
Hastings and Winchelsea lie a little further down the coast, or you could head inland and discover unspoilt villages like Battle, Burwash or the appealing town of Tenterden. And if you’re coming over on the Eurostar, The Gallivant is just a 30-minute drive from Ashford too.
For a grown-up getaway in the most invigorating of locations, The Gallivant is a name to remember.
