Although the house is off-grid, it offers wonderful features and a comfy stay thanks to superb beds, a large sitting room with French windows, a kitchen/dining room with hand-built slate-topped units and conventional loos and showers. This large and comfortable longhouse is in a very private, very quiet and unbelievably beautiful place on the Cornish coast. You can enjoy life to the full while making good use of the local resources – you'll probably be surprised and delighted to find out how easy it is to use the super-sustainable systems.
For sleeping, you’ll find a really comfortable king-size bed in a room oozing with country chic downstairs, plus two double mattresses on a platform upstairs under the eaves; brilliant for children, but will fit four adults at a pinch. Egyptian cotton sheets add to the pleasure of sleeping in such a restful environment and there's a shower room downstairs and two conventional flushing loos. Towels are provided of course.
The house accommodates up to 6 people in those two bedrooms; if you have 8 people in your party or simply want a third bedroom, the house has a studio flat annexe with king-size bed, kitchenette and loo, offered as an optional extra. (If you don’t need the flat, it won’t be let to anyone else.)
The kitchen/dining area is rustic, warm and welcoming and features a wood-burning range with hob and oven to cook your locally sourced food and keep the house toasty. There’s no mains electricity or gas, yet the house has lighting and heating and loads of hot water, as well as a fridge/freezer to chill your wine. It’s amazingly easy to live really comfortably.
The large sitting room is cosy yet elegant and features full-height windows overlooking the woodlands and the bay, and another wood-burning stove, so you can relax in the evenings. For your entertainment indoors, there are books, packs of cards, board games and a few simple musical instruments provided, so there's no need for games consoles!
Your privacy in and around the house is considerable. There is no other house in sight – just woodland, pastures, coastal slopes, and the sweeping curves of the bay and Looe Island. A home-built hot tub is available as an option so you can stargaze in the open air while steaming gently in the sea salts that are used as sanitiser.
The house is set in a hillside holding in South Cornwall, including half a mile of its own beach and foreshore (450 feet/150 metres down a very steep path and a shale slope; there are also some more conventional beaches within walking distance). Wild swimming and / or snorkelling are a must! The house has a large, mostly unfenced, private garden, and there are 70-odd acres of unmanicured Cornish countryside to discover, with goats, sheep and wildlife of all sorts. The land has become a privately run nature reserve and is now a place where you can visit with your family and friends for a memorable getaway.
If you manage to fully explore your expansive surroundings, within about 10 miles of the house are plenty of activities to keep yourselves and your kids busy: riding stables, cycling trails, boat trips to Looe Island, a surf school, sit-on canoe rental, a zip wire - even hang-gliding when the wind's in the right direction!
