The Details

Nestled into the rolling hills of South Somerset, The Old Lodge at Combe Head House is the kind of place that instantly softens your shoulders. This is a home with heart, history and a wonderfully grounded sense of calm, where original beams, glowing fires and thoughtful details create a stay that feels both restorative and deeply personal. Once part of the owners' childhood home, the estate has been lovingly restored and reimagined, and it shows in every carefully chosen corner.

Sleeping up to 10 guests, The Old Lodge is a generous cob cottage designed for togetherness without ever feeling crowded. Two large sitting rooms invite slow mornings and fireside evenings, whether you’re curled up with a book or gathered for long, laughter-filled conversations. The country-style kitchen is a joy to cook in, well suited to everything from lazy breakfasts to celebratory feasts, while the show-stopping dining room steals the scene. With its feature stone fireplace, wood burner and shelves of beautiful vintage crockery, it’s a space that makes every meal feel like an occasion.

When night falls, four spacious bedrooms promise deep, peaceful sleep, wrapped in old world charm and calming interiors. Exposed beams, characterful furniture and a quiet sense of comfort ensure everyone has a place to truly switch off.

Step outside and the pace slows even further. A tranquil spring-fed Victorian swimming pond offers you the chance to enjoy a cooling dip on sunny days and the lawned garden and gentle Somerset countryside set the tone for warm afternoons spent outdoors. The wider estate is alive with simple rural pleasures too. The family run a smallholding focused on sustainable living, with produce grown in the kitchen garden, rare breed pigs, pygmy goats, chickens and a flock of sheep adding to the feeling of being immersed in nature.

Combe Head House is also a place of creativity and community. Supper clubs are hosted throughout the year, alongside courses and events that celebrate food, craft and connection, with the hall and garden available for private gatherings.

Beyond the gates, rural Somerset unfolds around you. The landscape near Chard is a patchwork of winding lanes, gentle hills and timeless villages, perfect for walks, cycle rides and unhurried exploring. You’re well placed for discovering local farm shops, traditional pubs and the wider Somerset countryside, before returning to the quiet comfort of The Old Lodge, where home always feels just a little closer.
