Set amongst the rolling hills of Devon, Little Poro is a charming shepherd’s hut inspired by the owner’s trips to Scandinavia. You’ll find furnishings from Lapland, Iceland and Arctic forests, and the hut's name ‘Poro’ means 'reindeer' in Finnish. Outside, you’ll find a Swedish hot tub, a snug outdoor kitchen cabin with pizza oven for alfresco feasts, and a Scandi-inspired shelter beside the firepit, so you can sit out late into the evening toasting marshmallows, sipping hot chocolate and planning your adventures for the next day.
To reach Little Poro you stroll along a charming walkway overhung with trees and into an orchard. In the evenings, little lights illuminate the trees, helping you find your way whilst adding a bit of woodland magic. You’ll pass the Cider House along the way which you’re welcome to use as a snug with books, games and plenty of DVDs to keep you occupied. At the top of the orchard you'll come upon Little Poro and beyond it breathtaking, uninterrupted views across the valley and over Exmoor.
The hut itself and the hot tub have plenty of privacy thanks to trees at the end of the orchard that provide a natural screen. Inside, you’ll find a sumptuous king size bed set beneath an antler lamp from Lapland. The hut features a well-equipped kitchenette and an ensuite shower room with a flushing toilet. You’ll be cosy whatever time of year you visit with underfloor heating, a log burner and a heated rail to keep your towels toasty and warm.
The outside area is perfect for making the most of long summer nights or crisp autumn afternoons. There’s a lovely wooden kitchen cabin, equipped with a gas pizza oven and a gas BBQ, with the space lit by fairy lights and lanterns so dinner can stretch out late into the evening. After supper, light up the fire and get cosy in the firepit shelter with a glass of wine, or go for a dip in the Swedish hot tub and watch the stars twinkling above.
There’s plenty to do in the area, especially for those looking to make the most of the outdoors. Remember to pack your walking boots as there are some stunning walking trails right from your front door along quiet county lanes, through rugged moors and along dramatic coastlines. Try Baggy Point, a circular walk that takes you to the edge of Croyde Bay, or the walk from Crow Point which takes you through a nature reserve and offers stunning seaside views. The Tarka Trail is a flat, easy bike route which is a fantastic way to soak up some of the scenery and there are water sports available at most of the local beaches and at Wimbleball Reservoir.
