Settle is the collective name for an area of serene parkland that contains boutique camping, cabins and carriages. The unique opportunity to take a break within one of three chic and unusual restored railway carriages will provide you the perfect base to settle down, unwind and spend quality time with a loved one. Each carriage offers a lounging area by a wood fire, a well stocked kitchen, a snug bathroom and a decking terrace, with a fire pit, overlooking a blissful lake.
Carriage No.1 retains many of its original features including wood flooring and cladded walls allowing for an authentic vibe throughout the interior. Through the double door entrance is a cosy living/dining area with a wood burning stove - beyond is a charming hand-built kitchen containing everything you need to cook a heartwarming supper by the fire. The intimate sleeping area contains an elevated king size bed, with feather duvet, soft mattress and blankets to ensure the perfect night’s sleep. Don’t forget the fire pit on the outside decked terrace, what better way to lounge about whether it’s morning or evening?
Carriage No.2 has all the luxuries of number 1 but with a light, Scandinavian feel. As this carriage was given a full sympathetic renovation using materials from the reclamation yard, the carriage is a different experience from its sister carriage, but the level of luxury remains the same. It would be remiss not to mention the superb double back doors, which give way to a large decked balcony, with a fire pit and dining area. Repose and enjoy the nature that surrounds you - geese, swans and waterfowl glide by on an undisturbed lake.
Carriage No.3 is the latest addition to the family and its restoration was only complete in 2020. Again, you can expect similar luxuries to the other two carriages, but exclusive features such as hand-made pine countertops and seating as well as a wraparound external terrace make it that little bit more distinctive. Dividing the kitchen and living/sleeping spaces is a beautiful, sliding Victorian rail carriage door, and an internal window which brings light and serene views through the interior. An elevated king-size alcove bed nestles in one end of the living/sleeping quarters, with beautiful folding steps to ease your way up. A quirky bedside table/work desk/breakfast bar pulls out from beneath the bed, above ample storage cupboards. Opposite, a built-in sofa with reading lamp and chair cluster around a reclaimed corner stove and firewood nook. A rustic table and stool, hand-built from repurposed elm, look out onto water and the surrounding treescape. Another unique feature in this carriage is the original heavy slide-action shutter door, shut this to maximise the cosiness of your winter retreat.
Situated in a picturesque area called Breckland in South Norfolk, Settle is located on one of the driest terrains in the UK. Nearby Thetford Forest and Kings Forest, offer the largest lowland forest in the country and have miles of tranquil trackways and paths to explore. Breckland is also a Special Protection Area (SPA) under the European Union Directive on the Conservation of Wild Birds and one of the few areas in England where the rare and shy golden pheasant may be seen in the wild. The site receives regular visits from passing muntjac, roe deer and hares. The lakes welcome a returning pair of swans each winter, as well as Canadian Geese in the spring. Other regular visitors include herons, waterhens, kingfishers and many songbirds. The lakes are also home to carp, roach & tench.
Tucked away within 30 acres of beautiful parkland, Settle presents the perfect space for settling down and switching off.
