Stay with friends or family in this stunning listed cottage on private land in Somerset
On the private road leading to the elegant Dillington House stands the Grade II listed Orchard Cottage, painstakingly restored to luxurious comfort without compromising on the aesthetics of this lovely house. From the farmhouse style interior finishes to the remarkable thatched roof, everything about this wisteria-dressed rural retreat suggests warmth and authenticity.
As you enter the light-filled open plan kitchen-dining room, with its whitewashed walls and exposed timber beams, you’ll know that you’re in a unique country house where every detail has been taken care of. Ten can sit down to dinner around the central dining table, and tuck into a feast prepared using the two ovens and induction hob in the well-appointed kitchen. On the same floor, you’ll find a quiet library, for those who have to get away to study or work for a few hours, as well as the woodburning stove-heated sitting room, where guests tend to drift after supper, to enjoy a film on the 55 inch internet-enabled flat screen television. The state of the art entertainment system includes a Bluetooth soundbar and Bluetooth DAB radio Soundsystem. One of the property’s four bedrooms is also on the ground floor, ideal for guests who struggle with stairs. The super-king sized bed can be separated into two singles, and this room benefits from its own en-suite wet room.
Upstairs, you’ll find a master bedroom with adjoining bathroom replete with a beautiful nickel-plated freestanding bathtub. Next door, another super-king sized bed can be split into two singles in a lovely bedroom with a walk-in shower off it. Stairs in the first bedroom lead up to a gable-roofed attic room, with two single beds. Although guests tend to allocate these adjoining rooms to families with children, the two uppermost beds are adult-sized.
In the grounds of the cottage you’ll find a substantial and well-maintained lawn. A few steps down from this is the patio, directly off the kitchen, with teak outdoor dining furniture, a great place to catch the last of the Westcountry light as you finish off a delicious al fresco meal from the charcoal barbecue. The superb outdoor, wood-fired hot tub gives you views over the garden wall and across the rolling hills.
Just forty minutes’ drive from the nationally-renowned Jurassic Coast, there are numerous attractions in the surrounding area. For a local drink, there are a handful of fantastic country pubs, including the Dinnington Docks and Five Dials. Head to Stocklinch Ales micro-brewery for a tour, or make a trip to the orchard and cider presses of Julian Temperley’s, which specialises in cider brandy. Outings can be made easily to the National Trust maintained Barrington House, or simply potter a hundred yards up the private track to Dillington House, with its open house and gardens.
