An 18th century cottage on the edge of the spellbinding Lake District; where mesmerising views blend with an exquisite finish.
Escape to one of Cumbria’s most sublime rural areas, with a stay at this picture-perfect cottage in the idyllic Eden Valley. With lush rolling hills falling into ancient woodland fells, it is a magnificent place on the edge of the mesmerising Lake District. Follow winding country lanes to the peaceful Lake Ullswater, before exploring the area’s characterful local towns and sleepy villages. With breath-taking landscapes around every corner, you can relax and unwind in a truly captivating location.
Elk Cottage dates back as far as the 18th century and is hidden in the private 20 acre grounds of the prestigious Rowley Estate. One of a handful of carefully restored farmhouse buildings, it has beautiful original features and spellbinding country vistas.
The living accommodation has been impeccably finished and includes a cosy sitting room, a traditional dining room and a well-equipped kitchen. With a large stone hearth and a cast-iron log-burning stove, the living room is a snug place to sit back and repose. Antique chairs and dark wood furniture give the rooms a real sense of character, while neutral walls and patio doors give them a spacious atmosphere.
Upstairs, there are two luxurious bedrooms that each have sumptuous beds and stunning aspects. The largest of the two has a vintage double bed with beamed ceilings and a deluxe en-suite bathroom. The second double/twin room also has an impressive carved mahogany bed with a quaint cottage window and an en-suite shower room.
Back downstairs, you’ll find a lovely sandstone terrace where a colourful tiered garden has an array of scented wild flowers. Reached through the modern country kitchen, it is ideal for a summer BBQ or a spot of bird-watching.
If you want to head out to explore the treasures of the Lake District then there is plenty to see and do in this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The serene Lake Ullswater is just 8 miles away, while the spectacular Lake Windermere is a perfect day trip. Follow the sparkling Eden River along the flourishing valley floor, and you’ll find the striking Lacy Caves or the Long Meg Stone Circle. The charming villages of Glassonby and Melmerby can also be found nearby, along with plenty of outdoor activities and family attractions.
