Set in the heart of Scotland, located in quiet countryside near Dunblane, Whisky Howf is unique, handcrafted accommodation for two. Nestled on the banks of a small loch, or lochan, this quirky little building offers plenty in the way of charm and romance. It has been built using traditional techniques with a Cruck frame supporting the roof in a style 300-years old. Sit out in the evenings watching the sunset over the water, surrounded by the local wildlife before retreating inside to enjoy a dram or two by the fire.
Once you’ve parked up, pop your bags in one of the wheelbarrows and trundle down the path to Whisky Howf. The quirky stone building looks like it has always been there, with its higgledy-piggledy stone walls and slate roof. Inside, you’ll find the beautifully handcrafted king-size bed is the real centrepiece of the space. The rustic oak frame is perfectly in-keeping with the natural surroundings and is complete with luxurious bedding. After sunset, lie back and enjoy the view through the stargazing window above and get gently woken up in the morning by the natural light.
There’s a cosy kitchenette with all the basics to get you started, including a double gas hob, oven and a fridge. You can enjoy the views out over the lochan and the countryside beyond as you prepare your morning coffee. Just to the side of this, you’ll find two armchairs in front of a wood-burning stove, a peaceful spot to put your feet up after a long walk in the countryside. Alternatively, help any tired legs recover with a long soak in the roll-top slipper bath in its own nook next to the bed. You’ll also find an en-suite bathroom with a compost toilet, shower and wash basin.
Outside, you have your own little courtyard to the front of the house with a table and chairs where you can sit out and while away the hours watching the wildlife in, on and around the water. In the evening, get the barbecue going, light the fire pit and tuck into a delicious dinner as the sun descends.
There are two acres of grounds and gardens to explore around Whisky Howf at Craighead and you can stride out into the countryside to explore more of Scotland’s beautiful landscapes. The location feels tranquil and secluded, yet is close to some of Scotland’s most popular attractions. Edinburgh and Glasgow are easily reached by car or train and a short drive to the west will get you to Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park with a whole host of outdoor activities on offer.
