The epitome of the word retreat, this impressive home on the western coast is wonderfully remote, with staggering views directly over the sea to the isles of Raasay and Skye. A peninsula referred to by its ancient occupants as 'the sanctuary', it's truly a place to escape it all and just take some time to yourselves. With the ever-changing weather and the wild landscape visible from every room, it's an adventure just being here. Whether it's hiking, biking, kayaking or dolphin watching, it's all here on your doorstep.
The home itself is modern, luxurious and built with great eco-credentials. Open-plan living space and vast windows make the most of the panoramic views, with outdoor terraces facing the sea. There's a fabulous kitchen with all the mod-cons you could need, a snug media room and library to keep you entertained on rainy days and numerous bedrooms – each with its own character. A separate studio has its own facilities and can sleep four – perfect if some of your group would prefer a little independence.
And while it's about as rural as it gets, with the nearest major town being Inverness (around two hours by car), it's not exactly isolated. You can walk to the nearby pub, which boasts some of the best views on this stretch of coast, or a little further to an excellent restaurant, and there's a small shop locally. You can even arrange supermarket deliveries.
After a day in the great outdoors, you can unwind with some live music – the home has guitars and a piano if you're musical yourself, or else there's a record player and Bluetooth speakers. With no neighbours for miles, you're free to make as much noise as you like. Then light the fire pit, hop into the hot tub and cross your fingers for a glimpse of the Northern Lights.
Covering a huge swathe of the Scottish Highlands, Ross and Cromarty is one of the last spots of true wilderness in the UK. In Kyle of Lochalsh you’ll find one of Scotland’s most photographed castles – Eilean Donan sits on a rugged rock out on Loch Alsh and has featured in films like James Bond, Rob Roy and Highlander.
Exploring the towering mountains, empty glens and breathtaking landscape, it’s no wonder film scouts chose this dramatic part of Scotland as their backdrop. This land is home to Britain’s tallest waterfall, tumbling from the cliffs of the Kintail Estate. Up by Gairloch, you’ll find empty beaches that could rival the Mediterranean with their soft sand and turquoise shallows, but you’ll have to bring your own picnic because this place is far from the crowds.
