The Details...

Enjoy a truly unique stay in one of the cottages on wheels at Swallowtail Hill. These picture postcard huts have been designed by the owners and are found among the meadows and woods of the East Sussex countryside.

Guests can choose from two different, but equally delightful properties - Meadow Keeper's Cottage, which sits between the two wildflower meadows on the site, and Woodcutters Cottage in a secluded dell on the edge of Dean Wood. Both consist of one carefully constructed room that can accommodate two adults and two children. There is a double bed and two seating areas that can be turned into single beds at night. A table sits between them, while there is a small cooking area with a hob and sink. Bedding, towels, cooking equipment, crockery, cutlery and a cool box for food and drink are all provided, while there is also a small wardrobe and a log burner for those cosy evenings in.

The cottages are completely off the grid and have no electricity supply or running water, but rechargeable lanterns are provided, while the water supply is found outside. Guests will also be shown how to use the log fired shower and compost loo upon arrival. Also outside the stable door of each hut is a fire pit and bonfire cooking kit alongside a dining area for alfresco meals.

Meadow's Keeper cottage has its own private pond frequented by herons and kingfishers and a small rowing boat for the more adventurous. Woodcutters Cottage, meanwhile, looks out into the eight-acre woodland and is ideal for catching glimpses of birds, squirrels, foxes and badgers.

Tea, coffee, sugar, milk, cereal and condiments are provided by the hosts, but breakfast and barbecue boxes containing locally sourced and organic ingredients can be ordered to make self catering that little bit easier. Picnic lunches, afternoon tea and special suppers can also be pre-ordered and there is an onsite chef.

Visit the honesty shop with snacks and treats and say hello to the array of animals on the farm, from donkeys to pygmy goats. There are also nature walks to be enjoyed, while kids can go on Wild Woodland Club days during the school holidays.
