Devon Dens retreat is home to two gorgeous timber cabins that have been carefully handcrafted to blend in with Mother Nature. Built with an uber-green ethos and a minimal carbon footprint, they are natural havens with a sustainable slant. Expect solar power and dry toilets, along with reed water filters and delicious local produce hampers. Their cosy interiors offer crackling wood burners as well as plenty of light and space.
The Den sleeps up to six in comfort, with its open-plan living area, super king or twin room and snug mezzanine bedroom. There’s an additional sofa bed, and the kitchen boasts a full-size gas cooker with fridge and full compliment of pans and knives. Enjoy a steaming hot shower in the internal bathroom and outside is your very own outdoor firepit and barbecue with feasting table and log benches.
Within its own soothing woodland pocket is the pondside Cabin with a modern, indoor bathroom. Finished with calming pastel shades and oodles of natural light, the cosy, contemporary space is a relaxing hideaway. There’s a sweet bedroom with king-size bed along with a mezzanine level with twin single beds. The open-plan living and kitchen area has everything you could want, including an oven, hob and electric cool box. The Cabin can squeeze in an extra little one if needed.
A private session in the wood-fired sauna can be booked for those who enjoy the elemental kick of heat followed by a splash under the cold shower. Aromatherapy oils provided and a view of the trees being whipped by the wind. The perfect spot to forget the noise and news.
Spend peaceful days soaking up the tranquillity of the woods, waking to the sound of birdsong and the tinkling of the brook. Watch for the magnificent buzzards swooping in and out of the trees or the kingfishers darting across the pond. Local produce – from cheese and meat to cider and cake – can be ordered in advance for you to enjoy when you arrive.
There are books and puzzles for rejuvenating, lazy days, next to traditional board games. As night time falls, you can sing songs around the fire, devouring gooey marshmallows and gazing up at star-studded skies.
For adventure-filled days, the impressive digital app guests receive a link to, has maps with walking routes straight from the gate, or head to Dartmoor National Park to explore its wild open moors. Swim in enchanting waterfalls, discovering local pubs and cream tea stops on the way. Cornwall's famous sandy coastline is within easy reach and is known for its sweeping beaches and crumbling cliffsides. A new train line from Exeter to nearby Okehampton means arriving by public transport is now possible for intrepid, truly eco-conscious guests. If immersing yourself in nature whilst respecting the planet sounds just the ticket, Devon Dens will delight.
