St Cyr Des Gats, Vendée
A lovingly restored 19th century windmill beautifully set in the rural heartland of the Vendée region
Please note that the minimum stay for this property is 5 nights
For much of the last century, Moulin 85 was a working mill, supplying flour to local boulangeries and pâtisseries. The current owners saved the disused building with a thorough labour of love renovation, and it’s now one of the quirkiest choices for a relaxing break in the beautiful Vendée area on France’s west coast.
Just outside the village of St Cyr des Gats, Moulin 85 has all the cosy charm you would expect from a rustic old mill, but it doesn’t disappoint on home comforts. Explore the four floors, and you’ll find a well-equipped kitchen with granite surfaces, an open fireplace to keep you warm and snug in the living room, followed by a modern and stylish bathroom with shower.
Right at the top, the last flight of wrought iron stairs leads you to the romantic bedroom, offering beautiful views of the unspoilt locality. Think acres of farmland and tree-lined vistas… nothing better to give you that tranquil feeling of idyllic French rural life.
The village has a restaurant, bar, post office and bakery, with the larger La Callière around 3 miles away. The wider area offers plenty to see and do, and the famously clement Vendée climate means a good chance the sun will shine while you enjoy this special part of France to the full.
Just a short drive from the village, the verdant Mervent Forest is a huge haven for those who love to walk, see the wildlife or take part in something more energetic. Mountain biking and horse riding are popular; you can also hire a boat or bike to explore the woods and lakes. For a more relaxed look at the sights, the beautiful village of Vouvant is a historical gem with an 11th century church and the river Mere flowing through its quaint centre.
Moulin 85 is a great base to see the wonderful Vendée, and a charming property in itself. If it is peace and quiet you’re craving, the only sound outside your door will be the grazing sheep and the chime of the village church bell.
The property is not suitable for small children or animals as the stairs are quite steep and it may be dangerous.
The windmill is situated just outside a small village but is surrounded by fields. The Venise Vert for boat trips and Vouvant are nearby as is La Rochelle with its golfing facilities (approx 50km!). The Puy Du Fou is also within approx 1 hours drive.

We had such a wonderful honeymoon in this gorgeous windmill! It’s in a secluded rural location with a lovely private garden, surrounded by farmyard - so we’ll suited for people who want to relax, have a few bbqs and enjoy the evening sun. The windmill itself is beautiful inside, has a real rustic feel and is tastefully decorated. The bedroom is gorgeous! A real feature. A short drive away are some wonderful visiting spots, currently not too overrun with tourists! Would recommend to anyone wanting a relaxing, rustic retreat.
