Repurposed / renovated building
Waterfall Mill & Studio sits in a picturesque country setting and overlooks the breathtaking Cauldon Waterfall, which was famously sketched by artist J.M.W Turner from the mill itself. Perfect for a unique and special getaway with family and friends, the two stunning self-catering properties have been beautifully designed and finished to a very high standard. They can be booked together for up to eight guests, or separately for six and two respectively.
The mill is steeped in history and dates back to at least 1421, although some locals believe it has been around for over 1000 years. The building has been carefully refurbished into a contemporary home, yet still retains some of its original architecture and features, such as exposed Dale stone walls and wooden beams. The mill features three stylish suites (one double, one twin and one king size) that are spread across two floors. In each room, guests can enjoy wonderful views out to the falls and sleep on premium mattresses topped with crisp linen. The studio is also set on the first floor but has its own separate entrance and is completely self-contained.
At the heart of the main mill is the double-height, open-plan living space, with lots of space for socialising and relaxing. There are two comfy sofas, a TV and a selection of books and boardgames to keep everyone entertained, or you could simply admire the captivating waterfall vistas out of the French doors that lead to the terrace. The terrace spans the width of the mill and overlooks the falls. It is furnished with outdoor seating, a table and a BBQ which can be fired up in the warmer months, ideal for alfresco dining. Offering direct access to the riverbank, guests can take a plunge in the water and enjoy some wild swimming, then head up to their private sauna to warm up.
Adjacent to the main living space is the kitchen and dining area, designed to let guests mingle and chat whilst preparing a delicious meal. The kitchen is well-equipped with modern appliances, cookware and crockery, and you’ll also receive a welcome pack full of goodies on arrival. A gorgeous spiral staircase leads up to the mezzanine and an additional seating area with two armchairs, a cosy spot for unwinding with a good book.
The separate studio is a calm and relaxing space, with light and airy interiors and soft colour palettes. It boasts a cosy living space with a super soft sofa and TV, perfect for settling in for a movie night. Guests can cook meals in the mini kitchen with oven, hob and fridge, then retreat to the double bed when it’s time to sleep. And of course, you can enjoy waterfall views throughout the studio.
The stay is located in the village of West Burton in Lower Wensleydale. Centred around a large green, the charming village has a traditional inn, local shop, tearoom and butcher. West Burton is surrounded by unspoilt countryside, with a network of footpaths and trails leading from the village to the nearby open fields and forests, ready to be explored on foot or bike. The market towns of Leyburn and Hawes are both within 10 miles and at both, you’ll find boutique shops, cafes and restaurants. Also nearby is the historic Jervaulx Abbey and the Forbidden Corner Garden, or you could practise your aim with a spot of clay pigeon shooting on the Glorious Twelfth.
