Vintage Vacations has more than a dozen great reasons to visit the Isle of Wight – in the form of its glamorous Airstream caravans. Dating from 1946-1966, these all-American vehicles have been carefully restored into authentically retro pads which now find themselves on a farm just outside Ryde.
A set of gleaming mid 20th-century Airstreams dotted around a field are quite a sight, and they look as good now as they did back in the day. The interiors do not disappoint either – packed with vintage furnishings and good facilities, including their own showers.
Kept warm with electric heating, each caravan has its own style but you can count on some common features. A cooker and fridge with freezer compartment can be found in each kitchen, with crockery and cookware provided. All your bedding and towels are supplied too, with audio entertainment available from the radio and CD player. There’s even a stack of board games for the family to enjoy in the tradition of all good caravan holidays.
A toilet block with extra showers is present on site, along with plenty of parking and a mini-shop. Outside, each Airstream has its own picnic bench and deckchairs, plus a log burner and barbecue. Some of these vehicles are surprisingly lengthy and can accommodate up to 4 guests in various configurations. It may be a double and 2 singles, a double bed and a double sofa-bed, or a convertible dinette along with a double.
The Safari Airstreams are the babies of the group, and a popular choice with honeymooners, while the roomy 1949 Vagabond or one of the Spartanette trailers would be great for a family. You can even have the makings of a full English breakfast supplied for you to get each day started right – it’ll be in the vintage fridge!
The first people to bring glamping to the island, owners Helen and Frazer have been offering a little Americana to Isle of Wight visitors since 2004. Dubbed ‘The Country’s Coolest Caravan Park’ by The Independent, Vintage Vacations has picked up a few awards along the way. The location is ideal for exploring the isle’s northern coast, around 12 miles from Cowes and not too much further from Yarmouth.
Equally, the eastern side is within easy reach – traditional seaside towns like Sandown and Shanklin, and the beaches and botanical gardens of the former spa resort Ventnor remain close. Ryde itself is the centre for much of the island’s cultural activity, and its ferry port (‘The Gateway to the Island’) is, conveniently, only a couple of miles away.
A charming slice of America in a classic British holiday destination? We think Vintage Vacations has that one all sewn up.
