Tigh na Mara, meaning House by the Sea, is a breathtaking contemporary oak-framed retreat designed by architect Roderick James and his wife, Amanda Markham. Sitting proudly on the shores of the Sound of Mull, this striking home captures the very essence of coastal serenity, where vast glass walls frame ever-changing views of sea and sky.
Step inside and be greeted by an extraordinary open-plan living space where towering oak beams and floor-to-ceiling windows flood the room with natural light. The panoramic views across the Sound of Mull are simply mesmerising — from golden morning light glinting on the waves to fiery sunsets melting into the horizon. Sink into the comfy sofas opposite the windows with a warm cup of coffee and let the tranquil seascape wash your worries away.
The fully equipped kitchen, with sleek induction hobs and a spacious dining area, makes self-catering a pleasure. Whether you’re preparing a hearty breakfast before a day’s exploring or a candlelit dinner with loved ones, every meal here feels special. On sunny days, slide open the glass doors and step out onto the deck to breathe in the fresh sea air and listen to the gentle lap of water on the shore below.
Outside, the large, lawned garden stretches all the way down towards the shoreline, creating the perfect space for picnics, quiet reading, or simply gazing across the bay as seabirds wheel overhead. Down by the black volcanic sand beach, you might spot seals basking, otters at play, or golden and sea eagles soaring majestically above.
When night falls, retreat to one of the two beautifully furnished bedrooms — each designed for restful slumber, with soft bedding and soothing views. The peaceful surroundings, combined with the rhythm of the waves outside, promise a blissful night’s sleep.
Set near Lochaline, this is the perfect base for exploring the west coast of Scotland. Visit whisky distilleries, take a ferry to the nearby islands of Mull or Iona, or discover hidden beaches and forest trails. Back at Tigh na Mara, pour yourself a dram and watch the last light fade over the water — the perfect end to a day on the Scottish coast.
