Set in the countryside just a few miles from Bicester village, this Grade II listed windmill offers a cosy escape for anyone looking for something a little bit different. With panoramic views across three counties and the chance to spot some Red Kites, the surrounding area is just as special as the building itself.
Formally known as East Mill, the magnificent building has since been re-christened ‘The Windmill’ and is over 300 years old, dating back to around 1700c. It has seen a fair bit of history in its time and the original copper cap was donated to the Allies in the Second World War. While no longer a working windmill, having had its sails removed in the early twentieth century, it now provides luxurious accommodation for holidaymakers to the area.
Step into the Romantic Escape at The Windmill via the solid oak front door and make your way up the beautiful curved staircase to the second-floor bedroom, complete with en suite. The recent remodelling of the building incorporated modern touches to the cosy rooms while staying true to the charm of the windmill. Segments of the stone walls have been left exposed while adding in features such as a 4K TV and contemporary bathroom fittings.
Next floor up and you’ll find yourself in the kitchen. This cleverly designed space fits snugly beneath the stairwell up to the next floor and the counter curves round with the wall of the windmill. Everything required to whip up some delicious meals is here and the coffee maker is ready to go.
On the top floor, you’ll find a lounge that is really special. Windows around the entire room offer spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. If you’re up early enough for the sunrise, you might catch a glimpse of the deer who like to graze nearby. Even if you’re not an early bird, sit at the table and watch the incredible sunset with a drink in hand.
The surrounding area is packed with things to do. Just down the road is the luxury shopping destination of Bicester Village. Visit the heavily discounted boutiques of brands like Gucci, Dior and Burberry and snap up some high-end bargains. If a bit of sight-seeing is more up your street, the historical streets of Oxford are just a short drive away. Blenheim Palace and Warwick Castle are waiting to be explored, as is the stunning Waddesdon Manor House and its spectacular gardens. If you’re more of car enthusiast than a historian, Silverstone is just thirty minutes away.
