The detail

Contemporary cool meets West Cornwall calm in the serene apartment that is the Old Fish Cellar. Found in the ultra-pretty harbour town of Mousehole, around 3 miles south of Penzance, it’s a beautifully appointed hideaway with a history, and its style and cosiness make it an enviable location for a romantic break.

When you walk into this open-plan ground-floor pad, you’ll be impressed immediately by the attention to detail. Strong and muted shades of black, grey and white, original stone walls and sleek wooden floors set the tone, and make this property an intriguing mix of old and new. It really was a fish cellar once (about 300 years ago), and the place’s industrial past has inspired the textures and materials you’ll see around you… it’s as good to touch as it is to look at.

Facilities-wise, you won’t be left wanting. Check out the magazine-ready kitchen, equipped with reliably high-quality appliances like a Smeg cooker, KitchenAid kettle, Dualit toaster and Delonghi coffee machine. There’s a copper sink, dishwasher, washing machine and fridge freezer, plus a workbench fashioned into a dining table for rustic-style meals for two.

It’ll definitely be a pleasure to cook and dine here, and afterwards you can sprawl as much as you like on the deep-seat leather sofa by the eye-catching Hot Pod wood-burner. You’ll have use of a smart TV, Blu-ray Player, Bluetooth radio, Wi-Fi and iPod dock… but there’s plenty more fun to be had here.

With luxurious goose down and feather bedding and Egyptian cotton sheets, that king-size bed is going to be hard to get out of. Sliding into the en suite wet room, with underfloor heating and air-injected rain shower, makes the perfect prelude to an invigorating day out or a cosy early night. Look out for touches like the original ship’s lighting which give the Old Fish Cellar unmistakable nautical character inkeeping with its coastal location.

The lazy, winding streets of Mousehole provide an idyllic setting for losing yourself for a few hours. As well as the picturesque harbour, you’ll find some very inviting pubs, restaurants and cafés within a short walk: check out The Old Coastguard, 2 Fore Street and The Rock Pool Cafe

With art-loving Penzance so close by, and cultural must-sees like the Tate St Ives and Minack Theatre within a 30-minute drive, this beautiful part of Cornwall is a joy to explore… and returning to the Old Fish Cellar each night will make your stay picture perfect.
