The Details...

Take in the best of Italy's culture and history while nestled in the foothills of the majestic Mount Etna at La Dimora del Castelluccio. Located in the centre of the medieval village of Castiglione di Sicilia on the island of Sicily, the property offers breathtaking views across the surrounding area.

The ground floor of this elegantly renovated historic building is devoted to the nicely designed living space. Here there is a large seating area with stylish yet comfy sofas, and also a television and bookshelf brimming with books. This living space is perfect for socialising with friends and loved ones after a day out exploring.

A complimentary breakfast is included as part of the stay, made up from the excellent organic local products on offer, from the cheeses of the Alcantara Valley to delicious fruits and vegetables. This is served in the dining room, but could also be enjoyed out on the outside terrace, where you can sit and admire the view.

Guests can book one of three suites in this charming little B&B, or opt for all three for groups of six.

The first floor is home to the large suite, complete with its chestnut beamed ceilings and exquisite furnishings. There is an elegant bathroom with a sunken bath and further dressing room with a walk-in closet. From here there are also superb panoramic views across the Alcantara Valley and all its wineries, right the way to Mount Etna itself. As the property is perched at the highest point in the village, guests can enjoy looking across bell towers and pretty rooftops.

Going up to the second floor via the stunning staircase, which has been created by local artisans, reveals the second double bedroom. This is accompanied by a further en suite bathroom and also offers yet more fantastic views of the area.

The third room is unique and has been carved directly into the rock. It is a twin room with comfy beds, and its own private bathroom.

The village itself dates back to 469 BC when it was a fortress for the Greeks. In the Middles Ages it became a military stronghold and remnants of the city walls and the Castelluzzo tower of Castel Grande still remain. As the historic centre of the province, there are numerous churches and palaces to explore - including the Sant'Antonio Abate with its marble inlays, Baroque façade and Gothic-Byzantine bell tower.

The landscape is one of the most dramatic and beautiful in the region, thanks to the Alcantara Gorges and Mount Etna; both of which can be explored on excursions. It is also a booming wine area and there are opportunities to visit one of the many wineries, or to try the produce at local markets.
