The Details

Nestled deep in the enchanting woodlands of Preston, Northumberland, Hurkle Durkle Hut is a handcrafted A-frame cabin designed for ultimate peace and relaxation. Built with love and care by its owners, Ross and Kirsten, this cosy woodland retreat invites you to slow down, switch off and enjoy life at nature’s pace. Its name, an old Scottish phrase meaning “to lounge about long after it’s time to get up”, perfectly captures the essence of a stay here. With a wood-fired hot tub adding a slice of luxury to your stay, this is a fabulous spot for couples to enjoy a truly romantic break in a wonderful setting.

Step inside and you’ll find a warm, welcoming space that’s both rustic and refined. The cabin features a king size bed dressed in luxurious linens, a wood-burning stove that keeps things snug on cooler evenings and a well-equipped kitchenette complete with gas burners, toaster, fridge-freezer and thoughtful extras like herbs, spices, tea, coffee and cooking oil. There’s also a table and chairs for relaxed meals and a selection of board games for cosy nights in. You’ll find fluffy towels, robes and even a hairdryer ready for you, so you can pack light and settle straight into comfort.

The magic continues outdoors, where woodland birdsong fills the air and dappled sunlight filters through the trees. The spacious decking area is ideal for dining alfresco or lounging in the sun, and when evening falls, fairy lights twinkle above the wood-fired hot tub – complete with hydro jets and LED lights for that extra touch of luxury. As night draws in, stoke the firepit, pour a drink and let the peace of the forest wash over you.

Though perfectly private, the hut remains wonderfully connected. The coast is just 10 minutes away, with Alnwick, Seahouses and Beadnell all within easy reach. Spend the day exploring sandy beaches, ancient castles and charming market towns before returning to your woodland sanctuary for a starlit soak and a restful night’s sleep surrounded by nature.

Hurkle Durkle Hut is dog-friendly too, welcoming your four-legged friends to share in the adventure. With nature all around and the sounds of the woods as your soundtrack, this is a place to truly unwind, reconnect and, of course, hurkle durkle to your heart’s content.

Tucked away in the peaceful hamlet of Preston near Ellingham, Hurkle Durkle Hut is perfectly placed for exploring the very best of Northumberland. Wander up to historic Preston Tower for panoramic countryside views or stroll to The Pack Horse Inn for a hearty pub lunch. A short drive takes you to the coast, where you can walk from Seahouses to Budle Bay or enjoy the stunning beach route from Low Newton to Craster via Dunstanburgh Castle. Discover Alnwick Castle and Gardens, explore Holy Island, or sail to the Farne Islands to spot puffins and seals before unwinding with a pint at a local brewery.
