The Details...

Just twenty minutes by car from Dundee and set in its own eight acre private estate, Castleton House is a former hotel, painstakingly converted into a self-catering house for up to 20 guests between nine bedrooms. Comprising a substantial rural manor and freestanding annexed cottage in the grounds, Castleton represents the ultimate in rustic holiday accommodation, boasting nine bedrooms and seemingly endless luxuries for your entertainment, comfort, and relaxation as you enjoy a deluxe break in Scotland.

Castleton House is an Edwardian architectural gem a stones throw from Glamis, the castle best known for being the residence of the Queen Mother. One of the primary appeals is the abundance of communal spaces, meaning even very large groups can work, relax, dine, entertain or simply chat over a few bottles of wine all at the same time, without feeling cramped or crowded. As well as a spacious drawing room, guests can enjoy the library, dining room, full size billiards room and an ultra-decadent champagne room. A separate breakfast room and two full size kitchens complete the shared spaces within the house, which also features sizeable gardens, two outdoor hot tubs, and a barbecue hut in case rain prevents use of the large Weber grill outside.

Everything has been anticipated and provided, from three separate wood-burning stoves to the Indian treasure table outside, which sits beneath a private canopy. Circling the estate, the former moat has been converted to a forest walk, taking in the fruit orchards and passing the 25 metre grass lawn.

Internally, the aesthetic is eclectic, combining the original sandstone architecture with judicious contemporary art pieces. Bright block colours abound in the communal spaces and bedrooms, and the furniture is a combination of antiques and more modern pieces. All six of the bedrooms in the main house have some en-suite element, whether it be a full slipper bath tub, positioned to enjoy a view out over the gardens, or a sizeable walk-in rain shower and lavatory. In the separate cottage, three super-king sized bedrooms share a family style bathroom, while the living room features a pull-out sofa bed, and of course the cottage has a fully functional kitchen of its own.

The region of Angus is staggeringly beautifully all year round, benefitting from clear, starry skies, dramatic wooded hillsides, interesting foliage and varied topography. With its strong regional identity and highly regarded cuisine, Angus is a popular destination with holidaymakers the world over, many returning year after year to take in the birds, walks, country pubs, views and lifestyle of this slice of utopia. Guests with an interest in social and military history will find the local area particularly thrilling.
