Medieval citadel, former smugglers’ refuge and home to a Beatle, there’s a lot of reasons why people have heard of Rye in East Sussex. And it’s easy to see why the historic coastal town generates so much interest - its picture-perfect cobbled streets and lively vibe make for a heady mix. But with so much to do, you’ll need just the right place to unwind and relax.
Bee Cottage is a chic 3-bedroom holiday home sleeping up to six people. The house has recently been subject to a stylish renovation. Original fireplaces and collectible furniture inject just the right amount of character and colour, whilst modern makeovers in the kitchen and bathroom are sympathetic without compromising function and quality.
The immaculately presented bedrooms (1 twin, 1 double and 1 king) all feature Egyptian cotton linen and roomy beds. The bathroom has a large roll-top bath with a huge rain showerhead – pure luxury after a busy day of sightseeing. You can cook up a feast on the range cooker in the pretty kitchen whilst the rest of your group indulge in some serious chilling; there’s Netflix, Xbox, record player, wifi and a wireless speaker. Alternatively you can entertain long into the evening in the garden, with its lush plants, BBQ and colourful seating area.
When you do venture outside, you’ll find Rye is a perfect little hilltop town with cobbled streets, Tudor buildings and a picturesque harbour with an active fishing fleet (a great place to buy the day’s catch straight off the boat). Further afield you’ll find the rolling dunes at Camber Sands just 4 miles away, or why not try a guided walk around Rye Harbour Nature Reserve all the way to Camber Castle, built by Henry VIII.
The town is also host to a number of vibrant festivals, from Scallop Week in February to the International Jazz festival in August and the Wild Boar festival in late October.
Perhaps the most lively however is Bonfire night, aka Rye Fawkes, where the local bonfire societies dress up, light their torches and march through town to the huge bonfire and firework display on the Salts. You never know, maybe you’ll bump into Paul McCartney there too.
