The Details...

A little piece of mainland Europe in the Scottish Borders, Alpnhaus is full of surprises. This wonderfully authentic mountain chalet retreat for two is as close as you can get to Austria without actually going there, right down to little details like Alpine toiletries and a reassuringly continental breakfast.

Up in the remote hills of southern Scotland, not too far from Newcastleton, Alpnhaus is something genuinely different – and it’s genuinely Alpine too. Your host, Christa, hails from the German/Austrian borders, and previously ran a shop selling clothing and interior items from the region (oh, and a strudel bar too), so everything from the design to the food has been carefully considered.

You won’t need us to tell you this is a very romantic retreat indeed. A private wood-fired hot tub sits outside the chalet, with a beautiful tree-lined view ahead – even more picturesque when it snows in winter. The chalet has a large south-facing veranda where you can admire the surroundings and dream the day away.

Inside, Alpnhaus is all you could wish for and more. A lovely king-size bed with German down duvets, and the finest Belgian natural bed linens is likely to provide the best night’s sleep you’ve had in ages – and the evocative scent of mountain pine essential oil will only help.

The treat for the senses continues in the bathroom with its wood-panelled walls, bath and open shower area infused with the aroma of Austria’s most gorgeous fragrances. The main living space offers the use of Freesat TV with Sony sound bar, and there’s even a massage chair if you’re not relaxed enough already.

The kitchen is equipped with all the bits and pieces you’ll need, and the tempting breakfast delivered to you each morning is replete with muesli, yoghurt, cold meats, cheese, pastries and seasonal fruit salad. A selection of teas and coffees and some other essentials are provided too.

Rugged and remote – but pleasingly so – Alpnhaus is found around 20 minutes’ drive from Hawick and Jedburgh, and is the perfect base for visiting the likes of Kielder Forest and Observatory, nearby Hermitage Castle or Hawick’s newly renovated Borders Distillery. You could continue across the border to Northumberland’s spectacular coast and National Park for some of England’s finest scenery, or remain in Scotland and visit Kelso – the town’s large, Flemish-style market square has a hint of continental character itself.
