In the heart of the Ashprington, a quintessentially English village brimming with charm and character, Hillside Ashprington is a delightful self-catering cottage, with two king-sized bedrooms and a shared bathroom. Close to the centre of this small and quaint settlement, with easy access to the hills and vistas of South Hams, to Dartmoor and the South Devon coast, Hillside is the perfect getaway for couples, families or any other party looking to spend meaningful time in a beautifully refurbished cottage in a gorgeous region.
Pleasing, faithful design and additional touches of detail are at heart of the house's ethos. From the superb local craftsmanship you’ll see on display in the high-end kitchen to the specialised local wine hamper you can have waiting on your arrival, everything here has been geared to the ultimate, no-compromise getaway.
Architecturally, Hillside Ashprington is a gem, with stone walls, a slate roof, and a combination of original features and judicious modernising touches. Downstairs, the main living space suggests charm and rustic comfort, with a wood-burning stove, high ceilings, and sumptuous soft furniture. On the same floor you’ll find the excellent kitchen, with everything you need to whip up a slap-up breakfast, pack a picnic for exploring Devon, or prepare a feast for four hungry travellers at the end of the day. Upstairs you’ll find two delightful bedrooms, each with a king-sized bed, splendid views, and Egyptian Cotton bedlinen. Next door, choose between a decadent rainfall shower, or recline in the slipper-style bath tub with a specially chosen glass of local wine, taking in the soothing limestone walls.
Many guests choose to spend their trip gently pottering around this typical ‘estate village’, touring the local vineyard and otherwise staying close to home base. That said, for families, couples and friends who fancy straying further afield, you’ll be pleased to find that fine cuisine, culture, architecture and shopping, as well as of course sport, can be found close by.
Dartmoor National Park is of course a full-throated recommendation, reachable in twenty minutes via a drive which will take you through the marvellous market town of Ashburton. Totnes is just three miles away, and can accessed by road, cycle path, or a charming foot trail. Alternatively, beachgoers will be delighted by the proximity to some of the finest stretches of coast in the South West. Whether you’re a sunbather, swimmer, canoer or fishing enthusiast, the rapturous beaches at Wonwell, Mothercombe, Thurlestone and Bigbury are guaranteed to delight you.

Leave a reviewWe had a fantastic Christmas stay at Hillside. The cottage had been beautifully decorated with a tree and lots of other festive touches including a bottle of Sharpham fizz for my husband's birthday. The cottage is of a very high standard with superb kitchen and bathroom, lovely towels, sheets and bathrobes - felt like a boutique hotel. Great base for walks to Sharpham, Totnes, Dartington and within easy reach of some of Devon's best beaches. Serena was very helpful and accommodating with lots of great suggestions. Highly recommended.

I've been going to cottages for about 20 years, and like to think that I know how to enjoy them, particularly cooking. I have a box for these trips, containing things like my cooking knife (the ones at cottages are always blunt), a clean chopping board, a pepper grinder (I hate those pots of dust), etc. On a 4-night stay in September/October 2020 at Hillside Cottage, it never got opened. It's easy to write a property description with hype and hyperbole, 'the best', 'glorious', etc., well, at Hillside Cottage, it's all true. Everything here has been designed, not just plonked together, but designed. The kitchen is glorious, and superbly appointed. The bathroom puts some 4* hotels to shame. The Dining area/Lounge is comfortable and when the log-burning stove is on, has a couch that invites you to curl up and sleep. Full satellite/Smart TV, (running off the very acceptable WiFi), a bathroom that eclipses most you will ever use. It is just lovely. Everywhere. All photos here are authentic, this is the way it is presented. I would have loved the weather to be clement, so that we could have eaten outside, and used the thoughtfully placed garden sun loungers. It easily sleeps 4 with 2 bedrooms, with USB power points everywhere. Some minor suggestions: 1. Coat hooks by the front door. 2. Some black and yellow 'hazard' tape outside the bathroom, as there is a 2 cm drop which at 0300hrs can catch you unawares. 3. A washer-dryer, not just a washing machine. **NOTE - you need to be a confident driver to come here, because there are only 3 routes in/out of the village, and you may need to reverse along a road not much wider than your car to a passing space on any of them. I loved it, but then I loved the driving challenge! What a fabulous place, thoroughly recommended, and the perfect getaway. Wonderful, the best property I have ever stayed at. Honestly. Wow. Response from the owner: Great ideas. The large Boot and Boiler Room, with 10 shaker coat hooks, now boasts a separate tumble dryer next to the washing machine. The bathroom step now has luminous "glow in the dark" tile tape. Best wishes, Serena
