The detail

Settled on a mountainside in the pretty village of Zavala is this rustic Croatian villa on the beautiful Isle of Hvar. With lush greenery framing breath-taking coastal scenes, the island is a rare untouched beauty that is a must to be seen.

The historic villa dates back as far as the 1830’s and has an original Biedermeier style typical of the region. Deep green window shutters adorn the simple whitewashed exterior and give it a picture-perfect finish that has panoramic sea vistas.

The interior of the villa is a real rustic delight where authentic natural touches reveal the hidden beauty inside. Wooden floors showcase their knotted timbers and natural grains, alongside handmade furniture that has been craftily made. The living room is a sophisticated and elegant affair with traditional pictures and a working piano adding a certain intellectual air. From here, doors open out onto one of the charming stone terraces where uninterrupted sea views make it a haven for peace and tranquillity.

A basic but well-equipped kitchen is ideal for cooking some delicious local foods which can be enjoyed in one of the houses’ two dining rooms. One has a farmhouse vibe showcasing a large open hearth; the other has a more formal style with views of the magnificent surrounds.
The one double and two twin bedrooms each sleep up to two and have access to two family bathrooms with modern shower suites. Original handmade beds showcase traditional craftsmanship and skill, while crisp white walls contrast against the dark wood furniture within.

The small fishing village of Zavala sits on the beautiful unspoilt south coast of Hvar and has deep blue sea waters, pretty, shingle beaches and enchanting coves to its name. A delightful promenade leads you along the coast while stunning vineyards and charming villages can be found dotted along the mountain roads. A cocktail bar on the beach is perfect for soaking up the views, while the few wonderful restaurants are great for sampling the local food. If you fancy a little romance then there is even an intimate chapel just moments from the villa where secluded weddings can be organised in advance of your trip.
