  The Detail...

To the west of mainland Greece, Kefalonia is a charming Ionian island lined with secluded beaches and coves, and a stay at Villa Athena will let you discover all it has to offer. Little more than a mile from the resort village of Skala, this serene villa for 2 with balcony and infinity pool enjoys views out to neighbouring Zante from its hillside location.

The outside space will grab your attention on arrival, with spots to dine, sunbathe or just get some shade under the pergola. A charcoal-fired barbecue is ready to go, and that 10x4m infinity pool comes equipped with seating and four powerful hydro-massage underwater jacuzzi jets. Theres no better way to spend an evening, and with no neighbours nearby you wont have to worry about disturbing anyone.

Inside, its open-plan downstairs, where a tastefully furnished living and dining area is equipped with a TV, DVD and air conditioning. The adjoining kitchen has a big fridge freezer, microwave, dishwasher and all the essentials, plus there's a utility space with washing machine/spin dryer, an ironing board and electric iron for any laundry needs, and a downstairs shower room.

Climb the marble staircase and youll reach the bedroom suite, including a dressing area with plenty of storage space, bathroom with bath and shower and the bedroom itself starring an inviting queen-size bed and surely youll be bringing breakfast upstairs and enjoying it out on the balcony. Those ocean views are certainly impressive.

Villa Athena has a fine location, with the soft sands of Turtle Beach and the ancient ruins of Old Skala within strolling distance. As a fairly sizeable island, Kefalonia has plenty to explore whether you seek history, beautiful landscapes or just a truly relaxed atmosphere.

Among recommendations are the Mount Aenos nature reserve, the limestone caves at Drogorati and the Monastery of St. Gerasimos, the islands patron saint, while the breathtaking underground lake at Melissani should be on anyones must-see list. The dozens of beaches on Kefalonia range from tourist to tranquil, and pretty ports like Assos and Fiskardo are worth a visit too look out the for the Venetian-style architecture.

The islands busy capital, Argostoli, lies just under an hours drive away on the opposite coast, while Skala has plenty of shops and restaurants of its own much closer. The fishing village of Katelios is another local highlight, and perfect for a waterside drink as the sun sets.

With so much to see and do on Kefalonia, your first visit to Villa Athena may not be your last.
