If you have never had a Medieval Castle to yourself, then now is your chance. The Welsh Gatehouse, with over 700 years of history inside its walls, is a fabulous, award winning period building, that is a perfect romantic retreat. A Grade II Listed Building, The Welsh Gatehouse is as lovely and homely on the inside as it is impressive and robust on the outside and is the perfect base from which to explore both South Wales and the Wye Valley. . As you approach your gaze is instantly drawn to the two towers and the giant arched gateway which leads you into the amazing and pretty courtyard, filled with colourful flowers, that is shared with the larger Courtyard House.
The open plan living space, atop a spiral stone stair case, is a wonderful blend of oak floors, whitewashed walls and pretty windows. Sink into the comfy sofa with a book and glass of wine in front of the old style working fire, or cook up some delicious local produce in the fully functional, well equipped kitchen, before enjoying a film together on the television. Come bedtime, ascend the next set of steps up to the wonderful mezzanine sleeping area, with a big comfy bed ensuring you can have a great night’s sleep. Go up yet another level and step out onto the top of the tower where you can see for miles around whilst breathing in the fresh countryside air. There is also a wet-room style bathroom with a shower, toilet and sink.
Whilst this incredible property, with all its history, character and charm, is so lovely you may never wish to leave, if you do venture out there is plenty to see and do. Pop to the village and visit the local pub for some lovely ales and food, the perfect recipe for a delightful evening out. Or just stroll around the picturesque streets and visit Mathern Palace, St Tewdric's Church and Moynes Court.
Lovers of the great outdoors will be pleased to know that there is plenty of fabulous countryside on offer that can be easily accessed from The Welsh Gatehouse. Wentwood, the largest ancient woodland in the whole of Wales, is only five minutes away and is an enchanting walk amongst beautiful old trees. There is also golf, finishing and Chepstow Racecourse nearby meaning you have a huge list of things to see and do. The pretty town of Chepstow is also not far, and has plenty of shops where you can stock up on provisions.
