The Detail...
This marvellous, architect designed home is an irresistible countryside retreat that sleeps four people in plenty of comfort. Located just a short drive from the gorgeous East Loathian Coast and the buzzing city of Edinburgh, The Grieve’s House is a charismatic conversion that offers you an idyllic rural retreat.
From the outside this is a unique and striking building with lots of exposed wood, original stonework, and pretty touches of blue. The property is surrounded by a private courtyard with outdoor seating, a firepit, and mature olive trees. This is an ideal spot for sitting and enjoying each others’ company in the summer gazing up at the stars and throwing another log on the fire.
Inside, the property has a country feel, with evocative wallpaper designed by the illustrator Edward Bawden, and stunningly reproduced by printmaker St. Jude’s as part of their studio archive range. There are also plenty of modern touches, as well as some super-stylish vintage furnishings.
The bright inner hallway leads into an open plan country kitchen, with its own dining area that comfortably seats four. There’s also a ground floor boot room and cloakroom, which leads out into a courtyard. Guests may wish to spend time in the separate games room that is complete with a ping pong table!
The sitting room has a small, comfy sofa, as well as two armchairs and a wood burning stove. This means evenings spent around the fireplace are a real treat. You can keep yourself entertained thanks to the selection of books on offer, as well as the wall-mounted Smart TV.
The two atmospheric bedrooms are situated upstairs and share a large family bathroom, complete with a bath tub - ideal for a long soak after a day out exploring your surroundings. Both bedrooms make use of super-comfy beds and stylish features.
Guests will want to venture out and explore the area where there is a lot on offer. The wonderful city of Edinburgh is a short drive away and offers a whole host of activities including music and comedy venues, amazing restaurants, brilliant bars and quaint cafes. You’re also not far from the East Lothian Coast which is home to a number of charming beaches and pretty seaside villages and towns.
The property also sits in the centre of Fountainhall Estate which has a range of lovely quiet walks on offer, including routes to nearby Glenkinchie Distillery and the village of Pencaitland which are both one-and-a-half miles from the property. Pencaitland has a shop for essentials, as well as a small pub called the Winton Arms. The Glenkinchie Distillery offers some excellent whisky tasting and distillery tours. You can also order a delicious box of fresh organic produce direct East Coast Organics and have it waiting for you on arrival.
