Set high on a ridge between Monmouth and Chepstow, The Chickenshed is a bold and beautiful reimagining of an old poultry shed – now a design-led hideaway with showstopping views over the lush Monmouthshire countryside. Just minutes from the Wye Valley yet wonderfully tucked away, this is a place to press pause, reconnect and soak up nature in comfort and style.
From the outside, you’ll still spot nods to its agricultural past – corrugated-style roofing, timber cladding and a long, low silhouette that mirrors the shed that once stood here. But step inside and the transformation is complete. Created by award-winning architects Martin Hall and Kelly Bednarczyk, The Chickenshed is a masterclass in contemporary rural design – where clean lines, natural textures and warm materials sit beautifully within the original footprint of the building.
Inside, the shed has polished concrete floors, underfloor heating and walls of glass that flood the open-plan living space with light and draw the outdoors in. The main living area is open and sociable, so you can unwind together whether you’re whipping up a feast in the kitchen, enjoying a bite at the dining table or relaxing on the lounge seating. On cooler days, you can curl up by the log burner or unwind in the snug with a film or your favourite playlist – satellite WiFi keeps you connected, should you want it.
When night falls, the Chickenshed sleeps eight across four thoughtfully designed bedrooms – three with king size beds (two with ensuite showers) and one twin room, all with smart built-in storage and views that make getting out of bed a challenge. There’s also a spacious family bathroom with a bath and walk-in shower. Eco-conscious touches run throughout – heating and hot water come courtesy of an air-source heat pump, all tucked away in a neat utility plant room that also houses a washer-dryer.
On warm days step outside and relax on the wide stone terrace that runs the length of the building. This is the perfect spot for alfresco breakfasts or sunset drinks, as you breathe in the fresh country air and take in your marvellous surroundings. Wander into the large garden, explore the woodland or stroll into the adjoining wildlife-rich meadow, with direct access to Parkhouse Wood – a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest. And yes, your dog is welcome too.
Beyond your peaceful haven are some of South Wales’ best-kept treasures, including impressive abbeys, rugged peaks and meandering river valleys. Canoe down the River Wye and stop off at charming market towns, visiting nearby Monmouth or Chepstow’s celebrated castle grounds. The famous Offa’s Dyke Path is also a must for ardent walkers, while the enchanting Forest of Dean is perfect for bike-lovers. There are also endless tourist sights to keep the whole family entertained, including Puzzlewood forest, mining museums and Michelin-starred restaurants.
