Perched in front of the majestic Macleod's Tables on the rugged and romantic Isle of Skye, The Byre is a stone-built cottage with high ceilings and exquisite views. This property is now available to rent for parties of up to four people looking for a self-catering stay on Scotland's most storied and picturesque island. With a sociable kitchen-cum-dining area, flexible sleeping arrangements which suit friends, couples, or families, and a number of dog-friendly features, The Byre is the ultimate Skye home away from home, whether your making your first trip to the island or you're a long term visitor.
Although the original construction dates back to the 1880s, The Byre has since been renovated with care and expertise, creating a charming and domestic space with all of the contemporary comforts you look forward to after a long day spent exploring the wilderness. The kitchen is a highly sociable space, where most guests tend to spend their mornings and evenings, drinking coffee as they decide the day's hiking routes, cooking up hearty breakfasts and evening meals, and chatting together over a board game or group meal.
The kitchen opens up into the living room, which benefits from double height ceilings and a fitted wood-burning stove as well as a DVD-enabled television. On the ground floor you'll also find one of the bedrooms and an en-suite bathroom, making this an ideal cottage for guests with limited mobility, and a boot room, to avoid tracking muddy shoes and paws through the living space. Upstairs, the second bedroom has the same flexible set up as the first, with beds which can be used as super king sized or broken up as twin singles. The rooms benefit from a downstairs family-style bathroom.
The Isle of Skye is a truly magical place, with gorgeous terrain, dramatic hills and extraordinary fauna and flora. There really is nowhere else quite like it, and The Byre is the perfect base from which to explore everything there is to offer. Romantic but comfortable, spacious but cosy, connected but tranquil, it is a cottage which you'll yearn to return to time and time again.
The Byre is three miles from Dunvegan, making it a pretty and wholesome walk and a speedy drive. There you'll find some local shops, a few good restaurants, and a number of quaint cafes. You'll also find lots of Skye's destinations here, like Neist Point and Coral Beach, as well as Dunvegan Castle, an excellent outing for families and friends alike. Wild swimmers may wish to visit Fairy Pools, where you can enjoy a dip (wetsuits recommended!) or just a scenic walk.
Foodies may wish to visit The Three Chimneys restaurant, which is about a 10 minute drive from The Byre and offers up high quality, seasonal dishes with ingredients local to Skye and the Scottish regions. Another good choice for dinner out, would be Loch Bay. This tiny seafood restaurant was awarded a Michelin star in 2018, that it has retained ever since. Loch Bay is normally open Tuesday to Saturday and prices are at the higher end of the market. Also, thanks to the size, you will need to book in advance.
