Wow - you'll be hard pressed to find more iconic views on the whole of Skye than from the windows of the Lodge in the Loch. This lovely property, once a fishing lodge, looks across the waters of Loch Fada to the dark and craggy face of the Old Man of Storr, one of the Isle of Skye's most spectacular rock formations.
Built in the 1900s, the Lodge in the Loch has been converted from a fishing lodge into a luxurious five-star holiday home, with ample space for six guests. The property sits on the waterline of Loch Fada, one of the two Lochs of Storr, with the clean, fresh waters quietly lapping at the walls of the house and the edges of the garden. The lodge comes with its own private jetty, a gorgeous spot for fishing, wild swimming or just sitting and absorbing the breath taking views.
Inside the house it's all about those views, with a panorama from almost every window. From the dual aspect living room you can watch wildlife on the loch, with swans, buzzards, herons and golden eagles all regular visitors. You can spot otters hunting for trout in the water and romping on the garden lawn. And if you're very lucky, on a clear night you might just catch the magical green glimmer of the Northern Lights above the Old Man of Storr.
From the property's three bedrooms the views are just as spectacular. You'll find a deluxe en-suite master bedroom with a walk-in shower and kingsize bed; a second comfortable kingsize double room; and down on the ground floor a cosy twin with two single beds. The duvets and pillows are decadent, ethically sourced Hungarian goose down. There is a family bathroom containing a deep free-standing tub from which you can watch the ever-changing water and sky as you take a soak, plus a separate WC, with what must be one of the best views from the loo in the country.
The kitchen is fitted with bespoke wooden cabinets and has everything you need for cooking up a storm, plus you'll find a welcome pack of Teapigs tea and a few other tasty wee treats - very handy for that much-needed first cup of tea and a biscuit when you arrive. The kitchen has underfloor heating, as do all the bathrooms, and with an open fire in the living room, you'll be warm and toasty whatever the weather.
The property feels splendidly remote, but is only a ten minute drive from Portree, a bustling little harbour town with rows of pretty, pastel-coloured houses and a selection of shops, restaurants and pubs. The rest of the island is easily accessible by car, or if you'd rather not spoil the peace and quiet, head out on foot to tramp the wild and extraordinary landscape of Skye, with its handkerchief-sized lochs and strange pinnacles like something from a fairy-tale.
