The highlights
  • Bursting with bees, insects, birds and other pollinators drawn to the fruit trees and wildflowers, the area around Orchard Hut is a dream for nature lovers.
  • The hut itself is on the Yarcombe Estate, which includes Sheafhayne Manor, both of which were directly inherited from Sir Francis Drake, and are steeped in British history and local lore.
  • With acres of unpopulated woodland, farmland and hills, this is a truly remote and tranquil paradise, where you can take your picnic and lose yourself in the loveliest vistas in the South West.
  • Orchard Hut is centrally located for seafood and swimming trips to the coast, or cultural and culinary trips to the larger settlements of Axminster, Sidmouth and Exeter.

The detail

Nestled in a rugged and picturesque Westcountry orchard with unmown grass and views of wooded green slopes, Orchard Hut is a simple and romantic shepherd’s hut which comes with everything that a single traveller or couple need for a restorative time away. South-facing and surrounded by wildflowers, rare grasses, and pollinators, Orchard Hut truly is a unique and delightful way to get away from the stresses of urban life and thoroughly immerse yourself in nature.

The hut itself is pared down in its design, paying homage to the simple structures known for housing shepherds as they watched their grazing flocks. Timber constructed and cosy all year round, the hut is painted, and enjoys a private wooden terrace and stable-style doors. The area inside is well lit and airy from the large windows, creating the perfect space just to sit with an engrossing book, listen to music, or while away the long summer evenings chatting.

In the colder months, the wood-burning stove will keep you warm, and with a cosy and comfortable bed, you have everything you need for an enjoyable night's sleep. While there are very basic cooking facilities, most guests arrange for the three course 'basket breakfast' to be brought over from the farmhouse, to be enjoyed at a time and place of their choosing. Similarly, there are a range of one-pot dinners which the owners can prepare and leave for you, to be heated and enjoyed at your convenience.

While the hut doesn't have a bathroom, you'll have sole and private use of the farmhouse downstairs cloakroom, located just inside the back entrance of the property. This offers WC and hand basin only.

Most people lucky enough to stay at Orchard Hut spend the bulk of their stay out in the wilds of Devon, filling their lungs with Westcountry air. There a number of walks and trails in the immediate area, and you'll find the nearest pub a half hour's walk away, perfect for working up an appetite before dinner, and longer circular walks for the intrepid, experienced hiker who likes to spend all day out in the hills before coming back exhausted and exhilarated.

Being right on the edge of the Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Orchard Hut is perfect for lovers of nature to take in the light, the birds and the woodland scenery, while the famous Jurassic Coast and Lyme Regis are just twenty miles away, ideal for day trips. The region is also a foodie's paradise, with River Cottage, Mark Hix and the Furleigh Wine Estate in easy reach. Whether you're after seafood, artisanal cheeses, or fresh fruit and vegetables, this is the perfect destination for anybody who likes to eat well on holiday.
