The architect-designed Porteous’ Studio provides visitors to Edinburgh with a simple, styled and central base for their excursions around the city. On the famous Grassmarket, the studio has an enviable Old Town location yet is peaceful and private.
Just a few minutes’ walk from Edinburgh Castle, Princes Street Gardens and the Scottish National Gallery to name a few, Porteous’ Studio has no shortage of city icons on its doorstep. The studio serves as the perfect refuge after a day of sightseeing, and is just the right size for two.
The space incorporates an open kitchen and living area, a bedroom with double bed and a separate shower room with toiletries provided. The furniture has been crafted from a single oak tree from East Lothian – an example of the natural materials used to create the warm, tactile interior. A wooden screen separates the bedroom and shower room from the main living area.
Underfloor heating keeps the studio cosy at all times, while natural clay plaster walls regulate its humidity levels, adding another layer of comfort. The velvet limestone tiles complement the cobbles you’ll find on the street right outside.
You will be welcomed to the city with a breakfast hamper containing fresh, local foods. The kitchen area with oven and hob blends unobtrusively into the living space, with a table and benches to eat at, and tea, coffee and other essentials provided.
An inspiring space curated by the design practice, Izat Arundell, Porteous’ Studio has another purpose when not being used residentially. Regular supper clubs are held at the studio, bringing members of Edinburgh’s creative community together. The calming environment seems perfect for the sharing of food and ideas – you may find yourselves similarly inspired.
Edinburgh will certainly supply plenty to get you thinking, much of it within a short stroll of the studio. The National Museum of Scotland, Festival Theatre and Central Library rub shoulders with jazz bars, artisanal coffee shops and intriguing late-night cabaret venues, where you’re sure to make an interesting discovery or two.
