Nestled in the picturesque Somerset countryside, and set amidst glorious English cottage gardens, this beautiful Victorian railway carriage has been renovated and converted to provide unique accommodation for two. The Great Western Railway carriage, which dates back to 1882, now features everything you could need for a self-catering holiday, including a fully-equipped kitchen, and a stylish bedroom with ensuite bathroom in the wagon next door. Wake up to breathtaking views of the Blackmore Vale, the same landscape that inspired Thomas Hardy, and explore some of the best countryside in the West Country. In the evenings, sit out on the balcony and watch the sunset or snuggle up in front of the wood-burning stove.
Inside the carriage is the main living area and kitchen. The space is filled with natural light thanks to the twenty windows and double doors that open onto a railway sleeper ‘station platform’ terrace outside. The interior has been furnished in a colourful 1950s style with plenty of vintage and retro finds adding bags of character. Sit back and relax in front of the wood burner or tuck into your welcome basket (with freshly baked scones, jam and cream) at the dining table as you plan your holiday adventures.
The bedroom and ensuite bathroom can be found in the adjoining 1950s goods wagon. There is a comfy double bed with Egyptian cotton linen and fluffy towels. French doors swing open onto a balcony which overlooks a delightful private garden with uninterrupted views of the valley below. This tranquil, west-facing balcony is the perfect spot to enjoy the sunset with a glass of something after a busy day visiting the local area.
Located in the tiny hilltop village of Cucklington, close to the borders of Somerset, Wiltshire and Dorset, the carriage is both an ideal place to unwind and a great base for exploring the West Country. There’s plenty of walking to do nearby and the spectacular gardens of Stourhead are just 10 minutes away. A little further away, you’ll come across beautiful bluebells carpeting the woodland floor at Duncliffe and sweeping views across the chalk hills of Fontmell Down. There are also several cities to visit in the area, including the Georgian streets of Bath and the country’s smallest city, Wells. You also won’t want to miss the cultural delights of nearby Bruton, with its art galleries and award-winning restaurants, the thriving market town of Frome, and the genteel rural towns of Sherborne and Shaftesbury where you’ll find historic castles and cobbled streets.
