Happy on the Hill is owned and managed by Susan.
Standing in a glade, surrounded by mature oak and hazelnut trees, Happy on the Hill is comprised of two raised cabin-style homes, painstakingly crafted from local timber. Fully plumbed and wired, Jake’s Cabin and Gabriel’s Wagon offer the opportunity for guests to get back to nature in some of the wildest and loveliest landscapes in the Southwest without having to compromise on the luxuries which make holidays unforgettable.
A three mile woodland walk from the bars, restaurants, and the organic cooperative farm store of Bruton, the cabins are ideally located for those wanting to spend time in the rugged and verdant landscapes of Somerset, a region celebrated for its laid back, artsy and outdoorsy lifestyle.
Jake’s Cabin has been constructed from local larch and cedar, as well as incorporating recycled materials, and benefits from a living roof sown with local wildflowers, meaning that the house shares a visual language with the peaceful woods around it. While the nearby Gabriel’s Wagon started life as a milk wagon right here in Bruton.
Inside, floor-to-ceiling windows ensure that as well as the light and the views, the very essence of the surrounding forest comes into the house, creating a space which truly feels at one with nature. The interior of each cabin is largely open plan, with a studio style space incorporating the bedroom, living room and kitchen. A wood heavy aesthetic makes for a cosy and rustic room in both cases, and a comfortable double bed sits beneath a skylight in Jake’s Cabin, meaning you can doze off gazing up at the clear Somerset night sky.
Both cabins feature a tidy and pleasing L-shaped kitchen within the central space, containing everything you need to prepare meals for two with the finest local produce. Whatever the weather on the other side of the full height windows, the woodburning stove and renewable supply of firewood mean that you’ll be cosy throughout the day and night. Next door, the bathroom features a full-sized clawfoot tub with meadow views and classic, stylish fittings.
On arrival guests are provided with basic breakfast ingredients such as tea, ground coffee, milk, homemade muesli and oats, as well as store cupboard ingredients like olive oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, sugar. An online shop is also available to guests to purchase delicious home made and locally produced ingredients supplied in hampers to your door - the Rise and Shine Breakfast Hamper, the Birthday Hamper, or the Celebration Hamper, all of which contain a variety of amazing treats.
This area of Somerset is a real treat to explore, and most of the bars, museums and breathtaking natural spaces are within easy walking distance of the cabins. Follow historic drovers’ lanes to the Saxon town of Bruton and visit Hauser and Wirth’s Somerset Gallery, and make sure you check out the Roth Bar while you’re there. Or head to nearby Batcombe for a rustic pub with a roaring log fire and a selection of fine Somerset ciders. You may even want to visit The Newt, which is a country estate with magnificent woodland and gardens, that's just a five minute drive from your location. The famously beautiful Cheddar Gorge is just thirty minutes away by car, and is strongly recommended.

Leave a reviewCan't fault this place one bit. My partner and I had the most wonderful stay. Susan and Neil thought of absolutely everything and it was the most beautifully curated space, perfect for the long, relaxing weekend away we needed. Can't recommend highly enough. Already planning our next stay.
