The detail

Bask in the new wave of contemporary B&B’s with a stay at this stylish barn conversion in the flourishing Suffolk fields. Just a short drive to the coast, on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Five Acre Barn is bringing a fresh, new look to the country. Mature woodlands and maturing gardens surround its dramatic architecture, which includes a converted 19th century barn and a bold Blee Halligan extension.

Behind its zig-zag, sawtooth roof and natural cedar cladding, lies an exclusive collection of five double bedrooms. Each has been dressed with a sleek, minimalist finish and fuses vintage pieces with a cool, Scandi-edge. Look out for the bare ply timbers and the crisp white walls, along with the heated concrete floors and vibrant splashes of colour. Timeless mid-century Ercol has been salvaged and revived and sits beside retro Nordic prints and handpicked, local artwork.

All of the suites are in the new barn extension and offer spacious split-level living with double-height ceilings. Artistic living areas open out onto the gardens, while wooden staircases lead up to chic mezzanine bedrooms. Massive king-size beds are topped with uber-cosy bedding and look up through stargazing skylights for that added touch of mystery. Designer en-suite bathrooms are a sublime finishing touch and are stocked with indulgent toiletries and thick, fluffy towels.

A shared lounge-kitchen provides room to spread out and boasts soothing Farrow and Ball hues and comfy, sink-in sofas. Read the morning papers beside the roaring fire or plan out your morning walk on the local maps. Flavourful breakfasts are served in here and are homecooked from delicious, local produce. Choose a healthy granola or a Full English breakfast, followed with a cup of herbal tea or roasted coffee.

The modern B&B is set in the village of Aldringham and is nestled in five sprawling acres of lush, country gardens. Explore secluded, sandy beaches and enchanted, woodland paths, walking off your breakfast around the rugged, local farms. Look out for the darting rabbits or the rare Muntjac deer, following the winding Hundred River.

Visit quirky Thorpeness village, with its famous boating lake, or walk along the sweeping, sandy beaches and listen to the crashing of the waves. Suffolk is also known for its growing arts culture and there are a number of curious galleries and concert halls hidden in the area.
