The details

You'll find this perfect cabin for two, with its outdoor bath and wild swimming pond hidden deep in the North Essex countryside, yet only an hour and a half from London.

The Lakeside Lodge is located in quiet countryside, once a hunting estate, and now acres of fields and wildflower meadows. Set back among the trees, with views across the private lake, the lodge's wooden exterior blends beautifully into the landscape. A set of steps leads you up to the deck and the glass doors, which open wide on sunny days to let in the sun and air.

Inside, the interiors have been thoughtfully curated, with a keen eye for comfort and design. Reclaimed wooden walls and floorboards give a warm, rustic vibe, while the French doors and a skylight create a bright and airy feel.

The main space is occupied by a generous king-size bed, fitted with luxurious linen sheets, for a deep and peaceful sleep. On chilly nights, light up the wood burner in the corner and toast your toes while staying snug under the covers. If you fancy a movie night, the bedroom is kitted out with a fabulous retractable cinema screen and movie projector, pre-loaded with classic films which you can enjoy from the comfort of bed.

Behind the bedroom you'll find the charming kitchenette, well equipped with oven, hob, toaster, mini-fridge and everything you need to put together a meal for two - from scrambled eggs for breakfast, provided by the resident free-range hens, to a delicious evening meal.

Beyond the kitchen is the neat and tidy bathroom, with microcement in soft pink creating a super hygienic water-resistant finish. You'll find underfloor heating, beautiful brass fittings and a walk-in shower with a waterfall head to wake you up first thing. Bathrobes, towels and natural, plastic free refillable soaps are provided for your stay.

And if you're more of a bath person, just head outside. Under a shelter, shielded by oak trees you'll find the enormous free-standing al fresco tub. Light the lanterns and have a magical outdoor soak as the sun sets and the stars come out. Epsom salts and bubble bath are provided.

Al fresco dining is a must here too. The wooden deck with its table and chairs is the perfect spot to sip your morning coffee, enjoy the lake views and plan the day ahead. You'll also find a fire pit and grill, so you can get dinner sizzling over the fire, while you open a bottle of something cold.

On warm days, work up an appetite with a refreshing dip in the lake, or splash about on the paddle boards provided. Relax afterwards with a session in the sauna pod, overlooking the water. You'll also find yoga mats to unroll on the deck for a morning stretch in the sunshine.

Rainy days are taken are taken care of too, just make yourself a pot of fresh coffee with the V60 coffee dripper with bean grinder and locally roasted fresh coffee beans, and while away the time with the stack of books and board games on offer.

For days out, a stroll down the footpath takes you into the little village of Thorpe-le-Soken with its pub and village shop. Essex's sunshine coast, with the beaches of Frinton on Sea, Walton on the Naze and Holland on Sea is only a 10 minute drive, or accessible by train from the village, while further afield Manningtree, Dedham Vale, Wivenhoe and Colchester are all within 30 minutes.

Incredible little cabin just 1.5 hours from central London. Everything was perfectly provisioned for a relaxing stay. We cooked, lazed in the outdoor bathtub, sauna, and on the sun loungers, swam in the pond.. In the mornings we woke up to bird song and friendly hens chirping at the window and at night we watched movies on the projector screen. It was a truly lovely respite from London life. Ollie and Ffion were also so welcoming and helpful before and during our stay. We will definitely try to be back soon!

Stayed July 2026

I stayed at The Lakeside Lodge with my 2 dogs. It was the first time I'd ever been away without another human. I wasn't sure how I'd be on my own, but as soon as I arrived and Ffion greeted me, I knew I was going to be fine. The lodge was so cosy and felt so safe, I had the most relaxing time. When the weather was fine we went for long walks on the nearby beaches, and when it rained we snuggled up on the bed together to watch a film on the projector. The lodge was really well equipped, the shower was hot and the bed was comfy. It was perfect for us. Thank you
