The detail

Designed by Porto based architect Guilherme Machado Vaz, Casa Afife is a beautiful example of modern architecture created to exist in harmony with its ancient and historic surroundings. More than just a holiday home, this house is a piece of art, and for those with a passion for thoughtful and clever architecture, it's an absolute dream to stay in.

This five story, split-level building is cut through with an eye catching central stairway which takes you all the way up to a lovely roof terrace from which you have a panoramic view of the surrounding countryside and the sea. Afife is only a mile from the Atlantic coast so as well as seeing it, you can taste it!

The open plan kitchen, dining area and living room on the first two levels are elegant and simple in their design with well chosen modern pieces that highlight the clean lines and peaceful atmosphere of the place without skimping on comfort. There's also a big comfy sofa, TV and WiFi throughout. These two levels of the building both join with the garden and outdoor living area where you'll find the most delightful pool designed to let you swim at its centre or just wander around the edges and get your feet wet with an icy glass of wine in hand.

The upper two levels house three bedrooms, one master with an en suite featuring a shower and bath, and two twins with an additional walk-in shower. All of the rooms are simple, elegant and comfortable with well placed windows which bring in the serenity of the surrounding landscape. The bedrooms are flooded with natural light but if you fancy a nap in the cool shade they all have shutters. The place comes fully equipped with all the appliances you'll need, including a washing machine, and though its construction sets it aside as something quite special, it is also extremely comfortable and welcoming. Built next to an historic chapel, accessed by a small path, Casa Afife was designed not to disturb the religious space but rather share in its quiet harmony.

If you want somewhere tranquil and beautiful this is the place for you. And there's also plenty to see and do on days out. The local village is less than a mile away and perfect for an early evening stroll, dinner or local shopping. There are also some stunning sandy beaches like Praia de Afife, Arda or Moledo nearby with fantastic surfing and water sports. You can camp, hike or fish in the nearby forest and during August there is a day long festival packed with parades, processions and wonderful food and drink to enjoy.

Nearby in Viana do Casteloat you can try some of the excellent gastronomic delights of the area and you might want to check out the weekly fair on Saturday in Vila Nova de Cerveira. And when you've explored all the fabulous surrounding beaches, towns and waterfalls you can head back to your stunning holiday home, cool down in the pool and enjoy your own little corner of paradise.
