La Calma is a breathtaking property, a very modern, Nordic inspired building offering a vast space made homely by the entirely wood-clad interior. Perfect for a family or group of friends wanting to soak in the serene countryside in this beautiful part of Spain.
Whilst not built in the traditional style of local rural houses, this contemporary barn blends seamlessly into its setting and offers incredible views spreading over the Ortigueira estuary and the A Capelada mountain range.
Located on a completely private estate, La Calma is surrounded by patios and a multi-level garden with terraces, overlooking an apple orchard that blooms abundantly in late spring. There is a vegetable garden in the lower part of the estate with seasonal produce and herbs which you are welcome to help yourself to when making a salad.
Upon entering the property you'll be struck by the light. There are large sliding glass doors and huge windows bringing the outside in and making you feel like you're part of nature. The pine wood floors and accents create a sense of warmth so that despite the open plan and generous space, you always feel cosy and at home.
The living, dining and kitchen area is elegant, huge and very inviting. With extremely high ceilings and a balcony along the upper level the space is light and airy and the owners have provided everything you could need in the fully equipped kitchen which, when suffused with the natural light, feels like you're cooking outside. There's comfy seating, a wood burner for chilly evenings and a large table to sit at and drink a few bottles of local wine whilst enjoying a long lazy Spanish supper.
There are two bedrooms on the ground floor, both doubles, which are spacious and fresh. There's also a bathroom and laundry room. On the upper floor you'll find another double bedroom with an en-suite and dressing room. In addition there's a workout area for those who like to keep fit, a designated work area and a lovely reading corner, all with views of the estuary.
Situated close to some of the best beaches in Galicia and surrounded by natural beauty, there's plenty to do and see. You can visit the Sierra de A Capelada, a place of international geological interest, go bird watching in the specially protected area of the estuary, or attend the Festival Internacional do Mundo Celta (International Celtic Festival), a wonderful celebration of traditional music in Galicia.
The region also offers numerous activities for active travellers, from horseback riding, kayaking, and cycling routes to surfing at iconic beaches like Pantín, Esteiro, or Espasante, all very popular with local surfeiros.
In the fishing villages of Cedeira and Cariño you can enjoy the local cuisine characterised by a wide variety of fish and shellfish, including the Ortegal barnacles – a local delicacy!
