Basecamp at 58 Degrees North, nestled in the village of Ullapool, is a sustainable conversion from an old building into contemporary accommodation. When you step inside you'll discover a thoughtfully designed, extremely cosy retreat, inspired by the rugged surrounding landscape. Pop your boots on the rack, stash your rucksacks in the storage area, make a cup of tea in the bijou hand made kitchen and settle down in front of the crackling wood burner to plan your adventures. Everything in Basecamp has been designed with comfort and coorie doon (nestling) in mind. From the small dining table where you can feast by candlelight, to the bedroom with its super king size bed and eclectic wooden furniture.
Stand on the doorstep and admire the stunning Loch Broom with views of Beinn nam Ban and before long you'll want to get your boots back on and head out to explore the wilderness in earnest. Return and have a hot shower in the modern en suite bathroom, taking advantage of all the local organic toiletries, and open a chilled bottle of wine whilst watching the sun go down over the Summer Isles.
The kitchen is well equipped to cook for two with a double hob, oven, microwave, toaster and fridge. The log burner also has a small oven, big enough for baked potatoes loaded with cheese, and maybe just one or two more glasses of wine.
Once the sun has set and your nest is lit by nothing more than the crackling wood burner, flick on the flat screen TV or settle at the table and play a game of cards.
When it's time for bed, climb under the pure wool duvet, lie on your back, stare up through the skylight and let the stars lull you to sleep. Over breakfast you can watch the ferry pass by or sit in the lovely stone-walled garden and breathe in the morning with your first coffee.
There's a lot to explore in this wild landscape and you can do so on foot, by bike or on the water. Every day brings a new adventure, whether it's a stroll through the gardens at Lechmelm or Lael forest and its Arboretum, enjoying the tranquillity of fly fishing or even the rush of cold water wild swimming. It is a place of extremes: mountainous ruggedness to beautiful white sandy beaches, banshee winds to stunning blue skies.
Ullapool has an excellent variety of cafes, pubs and restaurants, all with their own individual charm, including the BBC award winning 'Seafood Shack' and two great fish and chip shops. If you fancy a local tipple there are also two gin distilleries. There's a lively music scene at the Ceilidh Place, the Arch, the Argyll and more. Whether you’re travelling alone or with company, this is the perfect base from which to explore the Highlands.
