A snug retreat in the heart of the Peak District National Park, The Stables at Rocking Stones is a former stable block beautifully converted into a romantic bolthole.
This newly renovated cottage dates back to the 17th century and is filled with original features and luxurious high-spec modern touches. The property's generous terrace, bounded by a hand built dry-stone wall, opens onto leafy views of the Peak District, and while you'll find nothing but peace and quiet at Rocking Stones, you're only a short walk from the pretty little village of Birchover and a few minutes drive from the famous landmarks of Chatsworth and Bakewell.
Sleeping two, The Stables at Rocking Stones promises a relaxing stay. The property is situated across one level, featuring a lounge area with a wood-burning stove and underfloor heating to keep you cosy in the winter months. WiFi is available throughout, alongside a TV with cable/satellite TV and books, in case you fancy a screen break.
The kitchen features high wooden beams and is furnished with a fridge, cooking basics including pots and pans, oil, salt and pepper, dishes and silverware, an induction cooker, an oven, kettle, cafetière and toaster. A dining table makes the perfect spot to enjoy an evening meal, or on sunny days the outdoor terrace offers a fabulous space for some alfresco dining.
With a memory foam mattress, 100% cotton sheets and a fluffy feather and down duvet, the bedroom guarantees an uninterrupted night of peace. And thanks to the huge roof lights you can get comfy and star gaze from bed, as the lack of light pollution makes here for dark skies and bright stars.
The neat and spotless en suite bathroom boasts a luxurious walk-in rain shower, fluffy towels and robes, with little extras such as a hair dryer, shampoo and shower gel provided.
Perfect for nature lovers, The Stables at Rocking Stones’ location in the middle of the Peak District National Park means there are stunning views in every direction. Hike across the Monsal Trail or indulge in a trip to Chatsworth House, bike the Tissington Trail or a walk from Ridge Walk Mam Tor to Losehill. The geologic formation of Kinder Scout is a fantastic day trip for geography fans, as are Treak Cliff Cavern and Speedwell Cavern. Jacob’s Ladder is accessible from here, and the Bakewell Old House Museum is a must-see. Other beautiful walks from the door include Stanton Moor and the Druid Stone Circle, or Robin Hood’s Stride and its Hermit’s Cave.
There are also two great pubs only a ten minute walk away. One of these has a fantastic Sardinian chef and its own microbrewery.

Leave a reviewThe perfect place to get away - off the beaten track, quiet and peaceful whilst having easy access to amenities if you wish. The stables is warm, homely and clean and finished to a very high standard. The owners Rachel and Gerry are there if you need but it's also very private. Love the patio looking out over the fields and fab walks from the cottage without having to drive including robins goods stride and the nine ladies stone circle. Two pubs a short stumble away - ate at the druids which was welcoming and fab food. A perfect place to get away and enjoy the countryside

Perfect for a couple, in a fabulous location. Cosy, modern and appointed to a very high standard. Our 5th stay during the past 4 years at Rocking Stone Farm, perched above the lovely village of Birchover. The Stables adjoins the larger Rocking Stone Cottage accommodation. Both have great views of the Stanton estate, and are surrounded by trees, fields and birds. So peaceful! Owned by the lovely O'Rourke family, Rachael and Gerry provide a genuinely warm, helpful and unobtrusive welcome. We always make great use of their current info for walks, pubs and things to do. Equally welcoming are their dogs, Charlie and Jeffrey, their horse, Razzie, and pony, Cracker. Great Dales Public Footpaths in all directions from right outside The Stables. Two pubs, The Druid Inn and The Red Lion, are barely a 10 minute walk away (there are no shops in Birchover, though). Bakewell is just a ten minute drive. The Stables “studio” accommodation was created in 2022, to the very highest standard, comprising a heated flag stone floor - which we didn't need at all during our mid-February stay - with lots of light from the large windows and (electric) Velux skylights. A log burner with plenty of free logs. A Samsung TV with FreeSat and an Amazon Firestick, plus a DVD player. There’s even a Scrabble game provided. The 2-seat fireside sofa is very comfy. The kitchen area comprises a 2 "ring" induction hob, fan oven/grill, toaster and kettle. There’s a comfortable large double bed, and a fabulous 'wet room' waterfall shower. There are two, small private patios to relax on. What did we do during our four day stay? Walks, e.g. Baslow Edge and Carsington Reservoir. A wander round Bakewell, and the now “arty” Wirksworth. Plus, pubs: we recommend Sunday Roast at The Druid – you need to book. Our favourite pub was the traditional, cosy Marstons pub, Ye Olde Gate Inn, in Brassington. Tip: seek out the "true" Bakewell pudding at The Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop in Rutland Square / Bridge Street.

We enjoyed a perfect couple of days away at the Stables recently. The location of the property is idyllic, surrounded by fields and moorlands providing stunning walks from the doorstep. Rachael and Gerry are warm and welcoming, and have created a really special place here. Their attention to detail is incredible. This is reflected in the quality and personal touches in the decor and welcome products (including good coffee) and the details on the information they provide. We had a lovely meal at the Packhorse and a took a walk to Robin Hoods stride on their recommendations from the information sent on booking, and we were throughly impressed with both. I hope that we will be back in the future.

(Only just worked out how to leave a review!) We had the loveliest stay at the stables at the rocking stones. It was ever so comfortable and cosy with the fire going. Rachel was also just such a fab host and so welcoming. We would definitely come back and visit again! Thanks so much.
