The detail

Step back from civilisation and glimpse at life in the prehistoric era with a stay at the Rockhouse Retreat in the realms of rural Worcestershire. Built into a hollowed, sandstone cliff in 3 acres of idyllic, private woodland, this ancient Palaeolithic cave is straight from a fantasy novel. Journey through the dark, mysterious woods or through the undiscovered valley, before stumbling across the babbling brook at the foot of your Middle Earth dwelling. Beautifully updated, it is now an indulgent, four-room cavern that has underfloor heating, ambient lighting and hot running water.

The Rockhouse cave dates back more than 700 years and is carved from Triassic Sandstone rock that is millions of years old. Its rugged silhouette looks like any other rock front, however buried amongst its rippling folds you’ll find your own hidden door front. Blending quirky original features with gorgeous home comforts, it is an epic hideaway for a legendary romance.

The interior design oozes with a natural simplicity and lets the magnificence of the setting take central focus. Whitewashed walls are joined by atmospheric lights, along with handmade, wood furniture that sits on thick, rustic floor tiles. A bespoke wooden kitchen boasts a large Range cooker, while the caveman bathroom even has its own rainwater shower. Curl up in the living room or cook a candlelit dinner before lighting the fire and gazing out at the starry night vistas.

A cosy double bedroom can be found opposite the living area and is complete with a king-size bed and handcrafted furnishings. Doors open out onto the stunning, forest-view terrace, while an archway leads through to the modern en--suite bathroom. Complete with hand-carved rock basin and walk-in shower, the bathroom is the ultimate in cave house luxury.

The Rockhouse Retreat is hidden in Worcestershire’s Habberley Valley, on the edge of the lush Wyre Forest and the sparkling Honey Brook. Its rich natural backdrop is of majestic proportions and is the perfect backdrop for a romantic adventure. Follow the flourishing wildlife trails or forage in the forest, before returning to your fantasy cave and sitting out on the tranquil terrace. With a crackling fire pit and rolling hill views, you can enjoy a BBQ or night cap in the beauty of the great outdoors.

Unique place to stay, really nicely finished. Would have been incredibly peaceful but I think we were unlucky with the wind direction and could hear the Habberley Trail activity centre. A genuinely lovely place to stay but with a little bit more attention to detail would award 5 stars (eg nicer duvet, toilet door able to close fully). Despite that, we would throughly recommend and enjoyed our stay.
