Ever wanted to stay in an extraordinary local landmark and heritage site? Now you’ve got the chance, with the iconic Headington Shark House available to rent for up to 12 lucky guests. Created by the owner’s late father, and sculptor John Buckley, the 25ft fibreglass and steel sculpture seemingly crashes headfirst into the roof of the home, which is located on a quiet residential street in rural Oxford. Erected in total secrecy and without any planning permission, it's no surprise there was a six-year conflict with the local council to keep it. Thankfully, the shark won that battle and has gained an international following, praised for its meaningful backstory and powerful anti-war message. The property is not just a gimmick, but a stylish home perfect for large groups of family and friends.
Whilst the exterior of the Shark House might get all the plaudits, the interior is also extremely impressive. Spacious, comfortable and finished to a very high standard, the Victorian property is a real home away from home. It boasts four delightful bedrooms (three ensuites), all fitted with comfy king-size or double beds to ensure a sound night’s sleep for all guests. Two additional fold-up beds can be set up in the upstairs bedrooms on request and you can also make use of a double sofa bed for an added two guests (taking the total to 12). There is plenty of room for socialising and relaxing in the living room, and a well-equipped kitchen and dining area await to cook and enjoy a delicious meal. A real highlight of the home (other than the giant shark in the roof) is the botanical conservatory, a bright and airy room teeming with exotic plants, which opens onto an enclosed garden.
The house is in the heart of Headington, a thriving local community full of traditional pubs, cafes, shops and lots of lovely parks. Every Saturday morning, there is a vibrant market at the end of your street, with artisan vendors offering a great selection of local produce and crafts. Headington is 1.5 miles from Oxford City Centre and there are frequent buses heading there that are just a short walk from the home. In Oxford, you’ll find everything from world-class museums and galleries to fine dining restaurants and of course, the prestigious university, established in the 12th century (and open for tours).
