The eye-catching Ellis-Miller House can truly claim to be unique – designed by architect Jonathan Ellis-Miller in the late 1980s, this Cambridgeshire one-off is constructed largely from steel and glass. It’s a refreshingly different destination for a break for two in the small but perfectly formed cathedral city of Ely.
All on one level, this one-bedroom cottage offers a relaxing living space where you can sit and admire the Fens or watch the sun set over the cathedral – floor-to-ceiling windows making it all the more spectacular. You have a comfortable seating area with a sofa, easy chair and coffee table, with a wood-burning stove to warm you up as needed in the centrepiece fireplace.
A large flatscreen TV, DVD player and Bose iPod dock offer some entertainment choices, or you could simply curl up with a book in the reading room area. The contemporary kitchen is complemented by a light, airy dining space with a view of the garden and a little 20th-century chic courtesy of the Eero Saarinen dining table and chairs.
Your bedroom also looks out on the garden and features a king-size bed, and an en suite with a bath and shower. Unusually for a one-bed, there’s a second bathroom in the form of a wet room with shower, washbasin and WC, so no one needs to wait around to get ready here.
Just as impressive as the interior is the cottage’s outside space, which offers a secluded space for a barbecue or sunbathing on the deck, with all you need to do either included. A dining area on the lawn and covered parking for two cars are among other welcome sights, along with the bottle of wine and biscuits which will greet you on arrival.
Along with its magnificent cathedral, Ely and the surrounding area plays host to a number of museums and interesting heritage attractions, including Oliver Cromwell’s House. Its beautiful riverside area and Jubilee Park are well worth a visit, with The Maltings being a local hub for cinema and live events, and Jubilee Park often the venue for concerts on its bandstand. With Cambridge just over 15 miles away, it’s easy to explore the UK’s oldest university city during your stay at Ellis-Miller House.
