This marvellously traditional, hand-crafted log cabin is tucked away at the end of a winding, bumpy track - where sheep graze peacefully on either side. Shaded by beautiful ash trees at the end of an ancient cider orchard, Five Trees is a charming retreat for two in the lovely Somerset countryside.
The cabin was lovingly built over several years by owners Graham and Alison, and is now a superb romantic retreat with utterly fabulous views of the rolling fields beyond. When you arrive, gather in the rustic living room, where exposed wood and giant windows connect you nicely with the scenery outside. Sit on the comfy leather sofa and tuck into a good book staying toasty and warm thanks to the top-spec wood burning fireplace.
On warmer days, however, step outside and make the most of your incredible private garden area. Here you can relax on the lush green grass, enjoy an afternoon doze in the hammock or sit back with a drink in hand on the luxury outdoor seating whilst enjoying the view. There’s also a pair of loungers by the field’s edge, where you can sit in peace, and a great alfresco dining table for summer lunches. When the sun sets, light the firepit and toast marshmallows over the flames as the stars come out above.
Back inside, the cabin has a fully-equipped kitchen that makes meal prep a breeze, and there’s a dining table that comfortably seats your entire group. You’ll also be presented, on arrival, with a great welcome hamper filled with local goodies - think just-baked bread, farm-fresh milk, butter, eggs, cheese, homemade marmalade and the owners’ very own apple juice and cider. And don’t miss the honesty bar – a beautifully stocked cabinet offering a curated selection of local gins, perfect for a leisurely sundowner as the day fades.
When eyes grow weary, climb up to the mezzanine level above the lounge where you’ll find a super-king size bed. The ladder is steep, so do bear this in mind when booking. The cabin’s bathroom features a shower, WC and basin.
When it comes to staying entertained, you have everything you’ll need to unwind in style, including a selection of books, games and magazines, and binoculars for wildlife spotting and stargazing. However, if you decide to venture out and explore, there’s lots to see and do in the area. There are two mountain bikes you can borrow, making it easy to spin down quiet country lanes or set off on scenic footpaths straight from the door. The local pub? Just a 33-minute amble through the fields, or a carefree eight-minute ride away.
Somerset, the ancient heart of Wessex, is a land steeped in myth, mystery and rolling green beauty. From wildflower meadows and hidden beach waterfalls to ancient wells and underground reservoirs, it’s a place full of surprises. Wander iconic spots like Glastonbury and Cheddar Gorge, or lose yourself in tucked-away treasures. Then retire back to your cosy cabin and enjoy a restful night in peace and tranquility.
