Nestled on two acres of land in an area known as L'Estaque, Casa Youm is an absolute dream. Previously an artists' residence (Cezanne stayed there for six months) it is as charming as it is unique. The bespoke rooms, quiet social area and lovely swimming pool make this the perfect holiday destination for those seeking soothing luxury, peaceful surroundings and easy access to the bustling centre of Marseille.
The hotel is owned and run by a couple who bring their mixed heritage and vast travel to bear on both the décor and the service. Despite being in France there is a distinctly Spanish and Italian vibe about the place, think rustic pottery, hessian cloth and earthy tones and you get the idea.
You will be warmly welcomed before settling into your room. All of the rooms are different with big comfortable beds and lovely crisp linens. Some have deep square tubs reminiscent of Morocco, while others have wonderful tiled walk-in showers. All of the rooms have been thoughtfully put together to make you feel relaxed and at home.
After a peaceful night's sleep you can head out on to the terrace and enjoy a homemade breakfast at a lovely rustic table with a view and afterwards you might like to don your apparel and sink into the perfect swimming pool which is never too overcrowded due to the limited number of rooms. Lie by the pool and read a book or snooze with the sun on your face. There's also a drinks menu so you can enjoy refreshments as you sunbathe in the silence.
Dinner can be provided for anyone who wishes to eat at the hotel, just reserve a spot the day before and the hosts would be delighted to include you. There is no menu, the meals are three courses and change daily, so it's always a wonderful surprise. Any dietary requirements will be taken into consideration and many of the dishes are inspired by the host's Tunisian and Italian backgrounds. There is no communal eating and guests have their own table and privacy in which to unwind and drink fine wines.
After supper you might like to take a stroll to the Genoese tower at the top of the hill and enjoy the breathtaking view of Marseille. And for days out, there is a very popular 40-minute cruise from just outside the hotel across the water to bustling Marseille where you can rummage around at the markets and buy local fare, visit the many art galleries and do some shopping. The hosts highly recommend a five-minute train journey to Calanque de Niolon, which is a lovely place to go swimming and dine out. Yoga and pilates classes can be arranged at the hotel.
