Escape to the edge of the beautiful Cotswolds at the hidden retreat of Artisan Cottage. This Grade II* listed property in the market town of Chippenham, has been lovingly restored in a traditional style, whilst offering all the luxuries of modern living.
Sleeping two guests, you enter through the wrought iron gate and up the cobbled alleyway to the front door. Set across three floors, the entrance opens into the well equipped kitchen and diner on the ground level. Its exposed stone walls and oak beams of a traditional Wiltshire cottage blend perfectly with the crisp white lines in this space, which has a Belfast sink, oven, and dining table seating up to four people.
A staircase leads up to the first floor where you will find the spacious and bright living room. There is further exposed stonework in here, as well as a large sash window allowing light to flood in. Comfy sofas and a TV make this the ideal place to relax after a day of exploring. Also on this level is the bathroom with white wood floors, oak finishes, and a rainforest shower over the bath. And, when the weather's not so great, guests can cosy up in front of the fireplace and stay nice and toasty whilst enjoying an evening in.
The final staircase heads up to the cosy bedroom. With exposed beams, oak floors, and crisp white linen on the double bed, this stylish room blends the old and the new with ease. Guests are also able to use a variety of delightful Bramley Products, including hand wash, shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. Bramley blend their unique ingredients of apple seed oil and organic apple extract with 100% natural botanicals. So you can enjoy luxurious, natural products that smell wonderful, and offer genuine therapeutic benefits to your skin and hair.
Tucked among charming historic houses, Artisan Cottage sits opposite the River Avon and Monkton Park. St Mary Street on which it is located even features on the opening credits of The Antiques Roadshow. St Mary Street is a fantasy line-up of period houses — medieval, timber-framed, Queen Anne, Georgian — that the poet John Betjeman is said to have called “the most perfect unselfconscious bit of English country townscape one could hope to find”.
From the cottage people can walk or cycle for miles out into the open countryside if they wish. Yet despite that close proximity to nature, it is also just a short walk to Chippenham’s array of pubs, restaurants, and shops. You can also cycle all the way to Avebury from the cottage, and pretty much all of the trip is on scenic off road tracks. Chippenham is also a gateway into Cotswolds, which are just four miles away.
The cottage’s location in Wiltshire also puts it within easy reach of some other great attractions. The ancient stone circle of Avebury is only a 20-minute drive away, while Stonehenge itself is 40 minutes away. Alternatively, hop on the train and take the 11-minute journey to the historical city of Bath, or visit the picturesque villages of Castle Coombe and Lacock.

Leave a reviewWe had a great stay at this beautiful cottage for three nights in July. Lisa was a fantastic host, really helpful beforehand with communication and setting the house up with food provisions and lots of information about the surrounding area. We found the cottage to be extremely comfortable as well as a really good base to explore the surrounding areas of the Cotswolds and beyond. Would definitely recommend.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Artisan Cottage. The cottage was beautiful and very comfortable, and allowed easy access to several areas by foot. Relatively close to the train station, great walks possible to Lacock and Calne, as well as a day trip to Bath. Lisa set the house up with fresh sourdough bread, organic milk, eggs and butter. A really nice touch to an already lovely and rustic home. We would not hesitate to recommend it.
