You should know

• Limited electricity is provided by solar panels and wind turbine – plenty to run the fridge and to charge the lights and your devices. Off-grid means no mains electricity (no TV, no WiFi, no washing machine, no dishwasher, no hairdryer – and please don’t bring a hair dryer; the solar panels cannot power it.) Go for a windswept beach look instead.
• The cottage has a parking space for two cars.
• Bookings of over 7 days include an additional weekly clean, with towels and linens refreshed.
• The house will be available from 4pm on the day of arrival and must be vacated by 10am on the day of departure.

The detail

Step back in time at 4 Coastguard Cottages, a lovely terrace built in 1904, on the cliff top overlooking the sea. If your aim is to leave modern life behind and really relax and reconnect with loved ones, this is the place for you. This is an off-grid holiday, as to this day the cottage has no mains electricity. There is hot water on demand and the stove and oven are fuelled by LPG gas. The electrical supply is by solar panels and a wind turbine which charge a battery bank, supporting LED lights, the refrigerator and providing charging for phones and other devices. Though there is no WiFi available, there is a strong 4G signal at the cottage, so you could use your phone or tablet as a hotspot but we recommend that you take this rare opportunity to step away from devices, look up and delight in the stunning surroundings.

When you enter through the private front garden you'll find a beautifully decorated home, with uninterrupted views and golden light throughout. Cosy armchairs and a sofa nestle in front of the wood burner in the living room, the perfect place to unwind with a cuppa, stare into the fire and let the sounds of nature wash over you.
If you fancy some music there's a bluetooth speaker, but best of all is the piano in the living room, so if there's a musician among you, just push them in that direction and reward them with a glass of wine.

There are three bedrooms, one with twin beds or one super king, one double, and downstairs the third room which has bunkbeds and a trundle. All of the beds are very comfy and have lovely linen bedding. As you make your way around the cottage you'll notice eclectic art and pottery dotted about and the kitchen contains a dresser with all the crockery you could ever need in three pastel colours. A large dining table provides a perfect place to eat together or play board games and you'll keep warm with the second wood burner making the kitchen the cosy hub of your holiday.

Once you've claimed a room you'll want to head out and explore, and there is plenty to see and do. The beach is only 400 metres away so grab some towels and head along the cliff path for a swim, treat yourself to some fish and chips from the Sheringham Trawler before heading back to shower and relax. The bathroom has a traditional tub with shower attachment and plenty of room.

Without the interruptions of technology you can enjoy an evening of board games and wine. Or maybe crack open the paperback you've been meaning to get around to and settle in by the fire. With the sea air and the sound of the waves you'll be lulled into deep restorative sleep, and wake to the morning light peeking through the curtains.

There are several nice pubs including The Ship in Weybourne which does good pub food and has a wide range of gins. There is also a magnificent Sunday roast to be had at The Hunworth Bell and Wiveton Bell has lovely outdoor seating. For a nice dinner, visit Number 10 in Sheringham.
