Expect quirky, romantic and utterly eclectic at this retired craftsman’s workshop in rural Shropshire…
Let this quirky craftsman’s workshop carve a place in your heart as you step across the threshold and embrace its unusual past. Once a wagon wheel repair hub on an ancient country estate, Wheelwright’s Shop has now been reinvented as a romantic, rural escape. Explore the stunning country grounds of Shropshire’s prestigious Walcot Hall, strolling through the lush arboretum or visiting nearby Lydbury North. Curl up beside the fire and watch the tranquil rural scenes, heading out for rustic walks among the open fields.
The handcrafted wood cabin dates back to the 1840’s and has been carefully restored to retain its authentic qualities. Uneven timbers sit atop its mottled walls and look down on the reclaimed furniture and bare floorboards. An eclectic mix of curios adds to its weird and wonderful character and includes upcycled antiques and retired craft tools. Look out for the vintage stool with its designer upholstery or the wrought iron chandelier dangling from the vaulted ceiling.
The main living area is a large open space with a comfortable lounge, well-equipped kitchen, and handmade dining area. Rustle up fresh morning breakfasts on the modern gas cooker or relax in the classic armchairs next to the toasty wood burner. Throw open the patio doors and soak up the peaceful country views, sitting out in the gardens amongst the vibrant hues. On cooler days, you can stay cosy and warm, enjoying a steaming hot shower and lighting the Rayburn.
The snug double bedroom is small but perfectly formed and is hidden on a mezzanine level overlooking the open-plan living area. Quaint skylights look down on the comfy bed which is dressed with sumptuous pillows for resting weary heads. If you need some extra space then head back downstairs, where you can pull the thick curtain drapes around the double sofa bed.
When you wake in the morning you can explore the beautiful Walcot grounds, fishing in the lakes or roaming amongst the wild flower meadows. With over 30 acres of magnificent rural landscapes, you can don your walking boots and head out for adventure.
Shropshire is also home to a myriad of breath-taking walks, including the Jack Mytton Way and Offa’s Dyke path. Uncover historic castles and crumbling forts, or head into nearby Ludlow to sample some Michelin-starred food. On lazy days, you can relax in the local pub, enjoying hearty ale and delicious, home-cooked grub.
