With its trio of boutique hotel-style shepherds’ huts in the North Yorkshire countryside, Waingates Farm is doing glamping in serious style. If you’re seeking peace and quiet and something a little different, you have found it – around 20 miles from York and even closer to Ripon and Harrogate.
All in a secluded position with views across the fields, the Waingates Farm Huts each measure a sizeable 20 x 8ft. These hand-crafted gems have been individually styled and impressively so. Named Yain, Tain and Eddero (it’s an old Yorkshire shepherd thing), any one of them makes a cosy retreat for two.
Yain and Tain come complete with underfloor heating and wood-burning stoves and both feature an en suite shower room with complimentary toiletries. The kitchen is well equipped, with a hob, microwave, fridge and Nespresso machine, and the huts also pack in dining areas and double beds.
It gets better, because not only do you have a barbecue, fire pit and outdoor dining area too, but each hut also has its own wood-fired hot tub with logs, towels and robes provided. That would make a luxurious end to the day.
The more elevated Eddero is a slightly different design from the other huts, with a larger kitchen and a sofa which transforms into a king-size bed, maximising the space available. Outside, you not only have a barbecue but also two teak sun loungers, plus all the home comforts found in Yain are in this hut too. In addition, all the huts feature a TV, DVD player, DAB radio and high-speed Wi-Fi.
Waingates Farm is part of the family run Roecliffe Estate, a modern working arable farm. There are plenty of wonderful walks to enjoy on the Estate as well as it being an ideal location in which to explore the area further. Most of the bridalways and footpaths are linked so walkers or cyclists can easily connect to the local villages, or simply just enjoy a walk around the farm or a romantic picnic.
The huts lie within a short walk of Roecliffe village on the banks of the River Ure and its highly recommended pub, The Crown Inn. Around 15 minutes’ drive from the farm, Newby Hall House and Gardens makes for an appealing day out, with a miniature railway and Gyles Brandreth’s teddy bear collection among its attractions. The pretty market town of Boroughbridge is just a couple of miles from the Waingates Farm Huts, with some great dining options, a cobbled square and gentle cycling routes around the area.
Harrogate’s spa and Turkish baths, famous Bettys tea rooms and Mercer Gallery are just some of the reasons to visit, while Ripon Cathedral remains a must-see. Needless to say, there are countless things to see and do in York – the National Railway Museum and York Minster among them – and how nice it will be to have your cosy hut at Waingates Farm waiting on your return.

Leave a reviewA super cool! So peaceful, the ultimate in a Hygge getaway! Interiors so chic and comfortable with attention to detail on every level. Can't rate them highly enough! I'm an apprehensive glamper but this beats staying in a hotel hands down. I'm now a total convert to this kind of retreat. Like a 5 star hotel but without having to see another soul. Bliss! Fresh air, stylish interiors and a beautiful setting with so much to explore in the surrounding countryside...Would thoroughly recommend and cant wait to go back.
